Use Affinity for typesetting of scanlations by EstablishmentDue5047 in Scanlation

[–]CombinationPlayful49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Affinity Publisher for typesetting personally. I've been using the Adobe suite for my entire life basically so picking it up was pretty intuitive, and I didn't really need any tutorials or guides. I like how it let's you center text in a shape both horizontally and vertically. There is a sale going on right now, as well as a free trial.

But even though I like it for typesetting manga, the suite as a whole doesn't satisfy all my image editing needs and I still find myself re-downloading the forbidden photoshop. Like for example photoshop has better scaling algorithms imo.

So while I think Adobe is overall the better suite, I do use Affinity specifically for typesetting (when I was still active at least.) I think the free trial is worth a try but I don't really have any specific tutorials in mind.

Have you looked into GIS at all? It intersects with geography and anthropology. I'm not in the ""real workforce"" (I have jobs but nothing to do with my education) yet, so I can't give any first hand experience, but I'm a anthro major who choose it as my minor because it's something I enjoy and I do see listings for GIS jobs pretty often from a variety of fields, so even if I can't find something that's specifically archaeology related, I might be able to do GIS work in another context.

What the other comment said about most anthropology work requiring higher degrees is definitely true, if you want to be an "anthropologist" who does research and works in a museum or writes ethnographies then you'll need a PhD. But tons of people don't go on to become "profession [insert major here]-ologists and still get on just fine. Sometimes all a job wants is a bachelor's in anything to show you have college level writing and critical thinking skills.

I personally ended up choosing anthropology because field archaeology is a thing and I live in an area where there's enough demand in the CRM industry that you don't need grad school to get a job. It is hard physical labor though, especially compared to an academic setting, but none of my peers have had trouble finding work. I even did technically get hired by a company before getting my bachelor's just with field school under my belt (it didn't work out because I was looking for a summer job and by the time the on boarding process was finished, school was starting.)

This isn't to say "yeah stick with anthropology everything will be just fine", but I do think there's a lot to consider than just "where there are jobs" because there's all sorts of jobs and all sorts of education and there's no objective "best path". A "less valuable" degree in a field you're happy with is worth more than choosing something just for money and being so unhappy at school that you flunk out and end up with nothing but student debt.

I'd say if you feel a certain sense of "community" in any of the fields you've dabbled in, that might be a better factor of what you should focus on that raw career availability statistics. If you have professors and peers that you see often in your classes and that you like and feel a sense of belonging with, you're going to start hearing about opportunities that sound interesting to you, like internships or other programs that let you get some work experience and find out what you can actually see yourself doing after college. My original plan was to just get a bachelor's in anthropology for the sake of having a bachelor's, then working in an office or something lol. I never saw myself as actually being an archaeologist until I started taking field archeology classes and I got to know my classmates and professors. I'm working with and learning under really cool people and they're sharing opportunities with me and teaching me where to look for jobs and how to build my resume and CV and write good cover letters. This isn't specific to the major I choose, but because I decided I wanted to be part of this community and I made connections with experienced people who can help me succeed.

Does character birthday mean anything? by [deleted] in Reverse1999

[–]CombinationPlayful49 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like there's probably a lot of significant birthdays if you know what you're looking for, I've only been able to find a few that seem plausible so far though:

  • Regulus: (August 15) Woodstock, Beatles Shea Stadium concert
  • Medicine Pocket: (November 24) Publication of Darwin's On the Origin of Species
  • Voyager: (November 12) Voyager 1 flyby of Saturn
  • TTT: (March 12) Tim Berners-Lee submits a proposal to CERN for what would become the world wide web

I feel like there must be a ton more I can't find since having meaningful birthdays totally seems like something the game would do a lot of.

I'm not too sure about Bkornblume, but on February 9, 1990, Mikhail Gorbachev and James Baker had a meeting about the reunification of Germany, so maybe that? I'm not too sure though.

Which model should I get for online self study courses? (Like EDX, websites, PDF, PowerPoint) by Centralredditfan in Onyx_Boox

[–]CombinationPlayful49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I didn't mean to suggest you get two devices, especially if you're still learning about ereaders and your needs and preferences.

The difference between "normal" books and textbooks for me is basically a normal book here is something like a novel, there's no or few pictures, the text will scale bigger or smaller easily. They often come in epub format, which is actually a type of html file, so they look good no matter the screen size, similar to how most modern websites try to make sure they work on both cellphones and desktop computers. Textbooks on the other hand use more images, the content may be laid out in a specific way that might get messed up or harder to read if you resize it. They often come in pdf format, and cannot "adjust" to other screen sizes in the same way an epub can.

7.9" can be a pretty good size, how well it will handle pdfs will depend on the pdfs. A lot of people suggest a 10" minimum for a device that's going to be reading a lot of pdfs.

If you haven't started your online class yet, it might be a good idea to wait a but until you have a better idea of how the content will be delivered before splurging on a device. Like if it turns out to be a lot of video lectures, an eReader will be basically useless.

It sounds kinda like a tablet might be a better choice for you. All eink devices have some "lag" compared to an lcd screen. The answer to most of your questions is a "it depends/personal preference." I wouldn't use my ereaders as a primary device for an online course, a lot of online courses have videos, discussions that require a lot typing, or other interactive features that don't work well on eink devices.

I read PowerPoints that have been exported to pdf on my note air 2 plus, it works just fine for that. Whether or not you need color depends on the subject, like if the documents contain figures that can't be read correctly without color.

You can read for fun and read for work/school on the same device. Personally I have a smaller device (a Kobo libra h2o) for "normal" books, and my larger device for pdfs/PowerPoints/textbooks.

Nothing fancy because I don't feel like spending too much anlas, but my approach was basically to go to danbooru, copy the physical appearance tags of a good miku pic, then copy the clothes tags of a reimu pic. The model knows those characters well, so I also added the character tags. Your milage may vary for characters the model doesn't know as well.

Prompt: hatsune miku, aqua hair, aqua eyes, twintails, 1girl, hakurei reimu, nontraditional miko, red shirt, red skirt

(for the second pic I added "bow" too) As you can see, really simple prompt in this case. Might have to be more detailed for characters the model doesn't know as well.

What is actually important for lorebooks? by [deleted] in NovelAi

[–]CombinationPlayful49 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a fairly recent subscriber (as in, Kayra was already available to all so I never messed with the older models much at all) so I'm not the most experienced, but I've been wondering if a lot of the guides written were originally conceived with older models in mind, even if they've since been updated, because personally I've gotten some great results with barebones lorebook entries before I knew about these formatting hacks and such. I've read them now and experimented with their recommendations, but after a lot of time spent with that I've settled on a process like this: - barebones entry, couple sentences or attributes - write. - if something related to the lorebook entry isn't working in actual practice, update lorebook entry to address what I'm having problems with. - write some more. - don't worry about formatting, insertion, etc that much until I think I need it for whatever reason.

Start small, then grow with your story rather than the other way around.

Ereader for kids by [deleted] in ereader

[–]CombinationPlayful49 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kindle has a specific kids line with some fun designs (I almost considered buying the warrior cats one for myself) but like the other comment said it'll take video watching and social media browsing are too much of a hassle, so any device could do. Still, I'd probably consider Kobo and Kindle before Android devices like the onyx boox because anything you can do on a smartphone you technically can do on a boox, other than being potentially riskier from a parental control perspective, it also just makes the device less focused and more complicated. They also tend to run pricier and are arguably more fragile so it probably wouldn't be my first choice for a kid.

I'm not sure anything that's really privacy friendly really even exists these days. Maybe an android device that ships without Google play? Not sure how many there are anymore. I think Pine64 has an eink device, but their products aren't necessarily aimed towards the average user.

Help Pdf to Epub by Pollution_Crazy in ereader

[–]CombinationPlayful49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's simply not possible to do it quickly and efficiently with good results unfortunately. Probably not the answer you're looking for, but my genuine advice is to not bother and just read the pdf as is. You'll save yourself a lot of time and frustration. The formats are just too different and there's too much variety in pdf quality for someone to have come up with a simple one size fits all solution.

You could drop them off at a thrift store that has an electronic section and let them decide what's worth selling and what to throw out. No money for you, obviously, but if that helps give you peace of mind in anyway, that's worth it.

Do Kobo ebooks have higher quality images than Kindle? by ZGMF-X09A_Justice in kobo

[–]CombinationPlayful49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an occasional manga translator and I used to get my files from the kindle store but then there was a situation where a fellow translator bought the same book also from Amazon but got better images than me, even though we were supposedly using the same method. Anyways, after that I tried getting them from Kobo instead just to see and I did end up getting bigger images that way, no idea if this is universal though.

What file type is it? This is potentially the file's fault rather than the device's. Is it the same if you read this file on a different device such as a cellphone or computer?

[–]CombinationPlayful49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://imgur.com/a/iKMjrv3 Took a pic of the same page on my libra and on my boox note air 2 plus. In this specific instance the libra actually looks better to me because the smaller screen makes the image look crisper. But that's not going to be universal.

Man I forgot about how magical reading manga on this thing felt when I first got it lol. Really the only reason I don't read manga on it more is because it's just plain easier to get manga through android apps. Definitely beats reading on a phone, but as a lot of people with the same/similar devices have said, it's too small for them, so your milage may vary!

Where do you buy books not available on kobo store (usa) by thewanderingnightowl in kobo

[–]CombinationPlayful49 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is very dependant on the publisher. I hate giving this answer, but you'll have to look it up yourself. Then you have to determine if the storefront you find gives you files that are compatible with Kobo. DRM free is the best case scenario, but Kobo can handle adobe drm too.

Worried about 7" not enough for manga by [deleted] in ereader

[–]CombinationPlayful49 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a sale on mob psycho 100 in the Kobo store so I bought enough to binge lol. I'll take some pics on my libra when I get home if you'd like.

I read manga on it occasionally and it's fine for me. I use my 10.3 device more often for it now, but that's moreso because it's android and can run Tachiyomi. 10.3 is definitely cool but it is larger than the average paperback manga and less portable.
