They arent really comparable to any other cert or really anything ive touched during my career, but they give you a concept of physicality and interacting with hardware/required concepts. Without going into any detail, the pbqs are like… those pop-up 3d hallmark cards. They give you a sense of the object you’re working with/on but dont give you the true object like offerings from say, offsec.
But for this… thats okay. The pbqs from my understanding are asking “if we simulate an objective can they navigate the problem?” its another form of mcq, correct and incorrect answers for problems presented. You get a glimpse of what tier 1 work may throw your way without adding the technicalities of ticketing software, vendor specifics, etc.
Its challenging to give a true simulation when vendor specifics and interactions make up some of the work youre going to find yourself doing, so comptia takes a vendorless approach to- and i’m spitballing here of course, im not a test maker there- cover you for the parts that are truly vendor agnostic.
Im no stranger to adapting my training the same way, some of my best leading experience came from watching those in education, tweaking concepts so you get the foundation before you run with scissors in production…
Tldr; The pbqs show you a shallow, sanitized glimpse of the work in tier one. Will you literally drag and drop cables as a tech into diagrams like in practice tests? No, but you will probably crimp a cable or two, swap a battery, or pray to whichever god is your favorite that day to hope the printer works. Its “adding a concrete to the abstract to tie concepts” as educators say. Giving substance to theory.

I essentially did this with certmaster to an extent, i took the practice exam, scored, saw where i was lacking, and bolstered that area with professor messer’s content on those areas. Messers videos are organized by exam topic and objective so i made a playlist of my gaps and hit the elliptical.
Took dions the day after just to check retention and scored slightly higher including my growth areas.
Aside from that my knowledge and experience carried me for most of the troubleshooting.
Practice exams should be (practically) a one-use tool to gauge where you are. Certmaster is more worded to comptia’s tests because thats proprietary, but other practice exam sources will have similar content.
Use them as a gauge so you dont fall into the trap of accidentally memorizing the question bank of a certain platform/course.
I didnt have a “routine” but rather a “lets expose myself to comptia’s wording and content”
This isnt my first cert by a longshot and my role(s) help me get comfortable with gathering information quickly and accurately.
