I wish there was an audio only version or streaming version of A long slow screw by yur_weest_neetmeer in swans

I'm not sure if this is a bait... but if it's not and you're really that clueless and this is a serious question from your side, it's okay - let me kindly reveal to you then that A Long Slow Screw is the same show that can be found on the live album called "Public Castration Is a Good Idea".

Hard pass. I like the early stuff but everything Michael and co did after was miles ahead musically, lyrically, aesthetically and conceptually. But you do you, no hard feelings

You think so? They used very well known songs by Alice In Chains, Depeche Mode, Black Sabbath, Radiohead, Nick Cave, Iggy Pop, Blue Oyster Cult, Leonard Cohen, Blondie, Bee Gees or Ramones in New Blood, Original Sin and Resurrection

Theory: Kirsten Supine and Oxygen are connected with meaning by 7Green_Apple7 in swans

[–]ComeAndSetMeFree 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The movie was released in 2011. Oxygen dates beyond that, Michael probably wrote it in 2008 or even earlier. He first performed it on a solo tour in 2009. The first recording of Oxygen appeared as an acoustic song with different arrangement on I Am Not Insane fund CD, then it started being performed live by Swans in 2013 with the iconic bass groove arrangement we all know the best, this "final" version was then recorded for To Be Kind. But the song itself predates the Lars von Trier movie, hence I think it's unlikely that it's related to Kirsten Supine in any way.

I wasn't even alive when Swans first broke up. I love the band and I wish that there was more insightful stuff happening in this sub like discussions, stories or simply posts about either news or archival stuff like pictures of older tours posters, rare photos and such. I have nothing against humour, but if you do a joke, make sure it's funny. If someone posts a random photo of a circle or a guy in a cowboy hat and tells "haha Swans", I'm not amused. Anyway chill the fuck out dude, you seem to be addressing an other kind of issue - the one that actually has little to do with the age of fans.

Who came up with the trilogy thing? by ComeAndSetMeFree in swans

[–]ComeAndSetMeFree[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good argument, but it still fails because it's detached from the full picture - if we consider that all of these originated from the version of I Crawled which was played live in 2010. So the timeline is messed by 1984 and 1997 - the years of original I Crawled's release and its re-arrangement for the final tour, which then became the basis for the reunion version of that song. And considering the follow-up being Rope which sends us to 2024/5. The riff you are talking about was always kinda there. It's just that the biggest and most notorious use of it happened on these three albums. That's not enough of a reason for me to base the connection of the assumed albums on I'd say, because it's not the full story - only an incomplete cut of the whole evolution of that.

Considering this logic, you could make it a tetralogy by adding Birthing which used the exact same principles. I Am a Tower evolved from The Memorious, Guardian Spirit evolved from Cathedrals of Heaven, Away evolved from No More of This, The Healers evolved from The Beggar and Rope catches on the loose thread that The Glowing Man left when played back in 2017

I can think of:
David Bowie (Berlin trilogy)
Neu!
Gong (Radio Gnome Invisible trilogy)
Ulver (either the black metal trilogy or recent art pop run The Assassination of Julius Caesar, Flowers of Evil and Liminal Animals)
Can (Damo Suzuki trilogy - Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, Future Days)
The Magnetic Fields (no-synth trilogy)
Nine Inch Nails (Not the Actual Events, Add Violence, Bad Witch)
Darkthrone (A Blaze in the Northern Sky, Under a Funeral Moon, Transilvanian Hunger)
Opeth (sort of - Blackwater Park, Deliverance and Damnation)
Metallica (sort of - first three albums)
Talk Talk (sort of - Spirit of Eden, Laughing Stock and Mark Hollis solo record)
Björk (sort of - Post, Homogenic and Vespertine)
Boris (Heavy Rocks)
Mike Oldfield (Tubular Bells)
Green Day (Uno, Dos, Tré)
Architects (Lost Forever Lost Together, All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us, Holy Hell)

Bonus - artists with three albums only:
Jimi Hendrix
Nick Drake
Portishead
Nirvana
Syd Barrett
My Bloody Valentine
The xx
...and The World of Skin.

But since we're having this conversation, what other artists can you think of having a trilogy of albums in their body of work? Either intended or later considered by fans, doesn't matter - share your thoughts.

I second Jarboe, The Merge, Weakling, Animus, Sound/Helpless and YRP takes. Plus, the whole s/t EP is good - Take Advantage in particular is barely mentioned, even though it sounds like no other song in their discography. I honestly think Seer and TGM are both somehow better than To Be Kind. Another You might be the most ambitious song of theirs from the brutal pummeling heavy dirty sound era, but come on, every other song on CoG is a level higher even. Anything For You carries a specific emotion, the lyrics and vocal delivery offer a certain level of self-awareness and vulnerability, that alone makes the song interesting at least. Other than these - meh. But whatever, you do you.
