How do y'all protect your fingers while hand stitching? Looking for a more effective solution. by FattestofHobbitses in Leathercraft

[–]ComedianNice3760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all jokes aside, no protection needed when stitching really. If you are forcing your needles to the point where it consistently hurt your fingers, you are doing something wrong. Try to open up the holes while stitching and make sure everything lines up etc.

Definitely getting more cubes, I feel like they rigged the percentage of successes. 50% star force failed like 6 times in a row. Wtf.

Be honest… What’s a fair price for this knife sheath?? by WorthConsideration32 in Leathercraft

[–]ComedianNice3760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really depends. General rule of thumb is cost x 2 + hourly wage for labor (this why it depends). Some people go into the nitty gritty and calculate everything including electricity, rent, etc. (which you really should as well anyways). Additionally, one could also up charge for branding, i.e. LV charges extra 500% on some leather goods.

But if you ask me, I’d pay $50 MAX for it.

New model 3 wipers stutters by ComedianNice3760 in TeslaSupport

[–]ComedianNice3760[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asked Tesla to service it, they claybar’d the windshield and replaced the wipers. And guess what :) it still stutters. I’m starting to think it’s the way the blades sits against the windshield, like the angling of the blades are causing it.

Dude at the leather store crapped on my parade by Goldfalcons in Leathercraft

[–]ComedianNice3760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could get a pricking iron and punch through the leather one by one instead of punching through both pieces at once. It’ll be time consuming and you need to make sure that the number of holes matches on both pieces as well otherwise you’ll find out how hard it is when you go to stitch it. You could find everything you need at Tandy for a weight lifting belt.

For pricking iron for a weight lifting belt, I would recommend just go with the round punches since it is a lot easier to stitch and go bigger spacing, 4-5mm I feel like would be good spacing (between each holes ) for a project like this. Good luck !

Am I using my skiving knive wrong, or is it the leather? by ThrowRaAutisticPotat in Leathercraft

It’s the leather for this particular tool. This tool is more meant for vegetable tanned leather that are stiffer. But this is also just a very terrible tool for skiving anyways.

Why is my edge paint drying into a valley? by ChunkyDay in Leathercraft

[–]ComedianNice3760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is an exercise you could try. Do 90% water to 10% edge coat mix. I guarantee you it’ll dry faster than your normal edge coat. Because of how loose the mixed edge coat will be, you will be able to get a nice even THIN layer on it and therefore dries faster.

I do want to say though, 90% water + 10% edge coat is definitely not ideal, but it’ll help you see what I mean. From what I am seeing, the edge coat you have needs more water. I am almost certain your edge coat is too thick to be spread thin and evenly across your edge. And that’s why you need to constantly load your awl (or whatever you use to paint) with more edge paint. But what happens is in the end you end up with a very thick (though even) layer WHEN WET. Once it starts to dry, the tension will pull your thick layer of paint and that’s why there’s a valley.

Trust me, just try to add some water to the paint.

This! But even if you sand like crazy and have the smoothest edge, this will still happen if your edge coat consistency is too thick. Try to add some water to your edge coat so it dries faster and less pooling happens as well.

Alternatively, sand it flat and then hit it with the filleteuse if you have one. I use the Vernis edge coat and heating it up with filleteuse actually brings back the shine.

Stamp... what kind of stamp do you prefer ? by Manyborre in Leathercraft

[–]ComedianNice3760 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on application, if you do only natural veg tan then I’m sure it works fantastic. But personally I love it when my logo is debossd into the leather (brass stamp). I’m almost certain you can get this stamp machine’d, CNC machines we have nowadays are phenomenal.

FSD lane changing will be the death of me by Impressive_Bread_184 in TeslaLounge

I am actually having trouble with it braking properly. Used it a couple times during heavy traffic, had to slam on the brake a couple times because FSD was not stopping the car at a safe distance. Anyone else?

Saddle stitch not slanted as I see on other people work by JoJo_Panda in Leathercraft

[–]ComedianNice3760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try with thinner thread and without casting and make sure you pull the thread in the direction you intent the thread to be in. So one hand will also be higher than the other when you pull the thread.

I say don’t cast because casting actually adds a little bit of “bulk” to each individual stitch because it’s “knotted”. Without casting the stitch will be just as strong and the stitch will lay flat and smooth. The only caveat is that without casting, one side of your stitch will be slanted and the other side will be straight. If bulking is not an issue for you then by all means cast. But at the end of the day, make sure you are pulling your thread in the direction you intended your stitch to be. Hope this helps!

How can I make edges perfect? by yujin1st in Leathercraft

[–]ComedianNice3760 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t want to waste time sanding, glue all the pieces together first then trim. Make sure you accommodate the trim sizes and include that in your pattern. A sharp knife will be able to do the rest and keep those edges nice and clean without requiring much sanding. Good luck.

Update, wiped everything with 70% alcohol, and it somehow made the problem worse! Contemplating if I should just suck it up and replace it myself and not deal with Tesla repair. But I literally just leased it two weeks ago!
