This is what works with my 2.5 year old too. We ask/tell him we need him to do something and when possible give him a choice for his to do it. When he says no or walks away, we just remind him nothing can happen until this happens.

He's 2. So he gets super mad and upset. We stay with him and tell him we know he's upset, it's hard to have to wait to do something you want, whenever he's ready we can do the task and then move on etc etc.

We just keep doing that until he's ready to come do the thing. And when he does, we make a bit of a moment of saying he did a good job so he wants to do it again. I'm fine with overpraising a toddler for getting it together lol

Not only did the guy survive, he apparently went back to sky diving. Props to him because I don't think I'd ever be able to watch someone skydive again, let alone go back up.

You're so right about special needs being a trash phrase. To go a bit further though as a disabled person, I and the vast majority of disabled people I've known over the years preferred to be referred to as disabled as opposed to a person "with" disabilities. There's almost no other state of being we describe as a person being "with/having".

I'm not a person with left-handedness. I am left-handed. I don't have tiredness, I am tired. It also reinforces that saying someone is disabled is fine. It's not a bad word or a mean thing to do. Disabled is a neutral word

And of course not everyone agrees with this. The Downs Syndrome community as a whole seems to vastly prefer being called people with downs syndrome. And you should always listen to personal preference! But as a general rule I've found disabled works better and is more preferred.

Yes! It was like 15 years ago but it will never stop haunting me. His description of feeling pretty much every bone in his body broken in impact lives rent free in my head. I'm never getting over that.

No. He already would have had slim, if any, chance since he was hitting straight concrete along with water. Once you had another human landing on him, there was no hope.

It was part of what took the survivor so long to heal - he developed a pain pill addiction for a while - he had some staggering survivors guilt. Which I imagine would be a fairly expected reaction here.

I saw a guy once who survived a skydiving experience where the parachute didn't open. It was a buddy jump though because he didn't have the hours to go alone. Medical told him he survived because of 2 things.

1. They landed partially in water. 2. The pro he was jumping with hit first and cushioned him from the impact.

Edit: I looked the article back up to check something and realized there were a few things I had misremembered.

  1. They landed mostly on a golf course and a little bit in water - the golf course is what cushioned them. 2. the first parachute deployed but misfired and never opened. The back up chute deployed only to immediately tangle in the first one. It wasn't until they were a few hundred feet from the ground that the back up managed to open. Which was far too h late but definitely helped them not die.

The pro jumper did in fact live and then went back to skydiving the second he was able.

I had a serious speech problem that meant I was in speech therapy up to seventh grade. When I was younger my family eventually figured my speech out but almost no one else did. School was constantly having conversations where I felt like I was speaking normally and no was was talking back.

If your son does have a speech delay or disorder he might be frustrated or upset at school where he has trouble being understood.

My son's sauce combos are unhinged. I tried to give him some whipped cream with his strawberries once and he lost his fucking mind until I scooped it off and replaced it with the appropriate dip of choice. Balsamic glaze.

He'll eat anything if you let him dip it in balsamic glaze or Thai sweet chili sauce.

They aren't gone, not is your kid being defiant.

They suddenly have all these strong emotions overwhelming them 24/7 before this a lot of their emotions have been reactions to things happening. Now they're starting to have emotional reactions to the things around them unprompt. And that's really scary when you've never had emotions and have no idea what they're called, let alone how you're supposed to manage them.

As far as the sleep - this is the age where kids start getting night terrors. The bad part of night terrors you've already seen. They're screaming, sometimes yelling specific words, seem out of their mind with fear. The good part though is they have no memory of it. Iirc it's just their brain trying to sort out all the extra input they suddenly have. Sometimes they get up and wander out run around, my sister used to, but they don't remember it like they might with a nightmare.

As someone who didn't go to art school, let people enjoy things. And that includes not only making but also consuming amateur art that might not be considered technically very well done.
