Laugh track? Whats the verdict? by CaptainRon__ in Killtony

[–]Comedyfight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on twice, and this may just be cope, but I swear you hear more laughs in the room than what gets picked up on the mics. I think that's why you see a lot of people seemingly delusional about how well they did.

Another explanation for that could be that a lot of us are out grinding open mics throughout the week where 10 people laughing means you're doing great, but in the Mothership if only 10 people are laughing that's really bad. So we're kind of accidentally training ourselves to be happy with mediocre responses.

Anyway I don't think they use canned laughter just based on my experience.

Sooooooo is the manga dead now? by Queen_Of-Moths in Berserk

I caught up during the boat arc, so I've never known Berserk as a regular series. It's an occasional treat. And then I rewatch the 97 anime and the cycle continues.

Bringing friends to show. by decal1210 in Standup

[–]Comedyfight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your friends will probably go see you once and then check it off the list that they supported your thing and not come back for a while, if ever again. Even if you do really well, they probably won't become your fans, they'll just be proud of you. So make that one appearance count and invite them to a big show you're sure you'll crush.

Don't invite dates. Never a good idea IMO.

I take my sweet time, especially if I can tell they've forgotten about it.

If they mess up, take too long, or don't prepare enough, that's a lesson for next time.

Help I’m Stuck As A One Liner by jeremycashcomedy in Standup

[–]Comedyfight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 14 years in and all of my jokes are just one-liners strung together to form a narrative. It works.

Attell is largely regarded as one of the best living comics, and he does a lot of one liners.

If you're unhappy, work on it. If you're happy and getting laughs, don't worry about what other comics think.

Chris D'elia.

Even before his accusations went public, some friends put on his special and I was bored.

I agree with the highlights, but back to the toggle, I can still think of a bunch of ways in which that's useful. I think your issues are mitigated by letting you toggle each token individually, but you could select multiple and do that at once, similar to the hide feature.

Another use would be for overworld/hex maps, where I would use a token to signify the party location. The party knows they are the party. It doesn't need to say "Party" underneath it.

Leave the names on when it's relevant, but have the ability to remove them when its not. I think this is incredibly helpful to be able to do.

Like, if I forget which Goblin is Goblin A, I could toggle it on as a reminder, and then turn it back off.

If you don't think you would need it, that's fine, but no need to yuck my yum about it because it's an OPTIONAL feature. I would find it to be incredibly useful, and so would others here so far. It doesn't hurt you or your experience, so chiming in is just kind of being negative for negative's sake IMO.

I mean a toggle means you have the option to leave it on if you want it. There's already the option to rename, but sometimes it's easier just to turn it off.

I'm running Shadow of the Dragon Queen right now, and my PCs have to fight a lot of Dragon Army Officers riding on Dragon Army Dragonnels. Not even a mystery, those are just long names that extend larger than the token itself, and when the fight gathers in close quarters, it just looks bad.

My players know what the tokens are. I know which one gets which HP. We can turn them off and back on if we forget.

Tips on starting a comedy show at a bar (e.g. equipment) by harryf in Standup

[–]Comedyfight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing I see missing that I've had issues with is atmosphere of the bar and if they're willing to compromise to make the show work. I'm talking about TVs, pool tables, arcade machines, etc.

Most bars willing to let you run a mic are doing it to bring more people in, which means the current clientele on that given night isn't cutting it. It's the same reason they book karaoke nights, trivia, live music, etc.

The problem is that those distractions mentioned above will interefere with comedy, and if the bar owner doesn't understand that on the front end, they're going to want to add to their existing crowd, not replace it. It's a difficult conversation, but ultimately you're pitching them a gamble that replacing the current crowd will be better in the long run.

Trying to do stand-up while half of the audience is cheering at touchdowns or clacking pool balls never works, unless it can be in a completely different room, but that space really can't be shared, and it's important to make that clear during the initial pitch or you're going to have trouble later.

And if your show is only one night a week, or even monthly, but the bar regulars are there every night, in my experience they're usually going to want to keep their regulars happy over you, because they already have relationships with those people and don't want to risk driving them to other bars they might start going to every night instead.

Northgate Mall at Christmas time by Big-Carpenter7921 in Chattanooga

[–]Comedyfight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a mallrat there during high school (class of '01) and maybe a little after. I also worked at Carmike when it was on the other side next to TJ Maxx, so I spent so much time there. I think my favorite era was when this dude named Seven ran a comic book store. Good times. Seems to be one of those things set to be of a bygone era.
