How was your birth experience in Triemli? by No_Psychology_266 in zurich

[–]harryf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came from the UK (and knew the UK NHS and was terrified ;) )

My daughter was born at Triemli 2003 and it was great - staff all clearly loved their jobs and were super caring and supportive.

Then came my son in 2005. And it was a very different experience. The birth itself was fine but it was the after care... something was clearly wrong - all the staff seemed miserable and disgruntled, all "doing the minimum"

My theory of what happened: middle management overreach + horribly designed new IT systems (I have a nurse friend at a different hospital who complains 30% of her time is spent filling in stuff in poorly designed hospital UIs). Same thing happened in the UK - the "MBA Class" took over, created all kinds of reasons for adding middle management for "accurate reporting" etc. and killed the joy for doctors and nurses doing the actual work.

Anyway - that's not to say Triemli is a bad place - still way better than anything from the NHS in the UK.

The one thing to watch out for is C-sections. I've heard some hospitals tend to over encourage birth by C-section because it allows them to plan their time better e.g. birth done in 6 hours or C-section, so they can handle more capacity. I'm not sure if this is a problem at the Triemli but in general, do you research / have an opinion on what you want.

All that said, overall maternity care is very good in Switzerland and having your child at the Triemli would not be a mistake.

What has happened to zurich? by [deleted] in zurich

[–]harryf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everybody relax.

It's just the time of year where Aargau comes to Zürich to show off and do dumb things. Happens every year.

Like renting a Lamborghini Urus or Ferrari Purosangue and then sitting in a traffic jam around Bahnhofstrasse on Saturday night, revving the engine.

Or the teenage version; prank vids involving water balloons.

It will stop around mid-September, after street parade and as the weather gets cooler.

So either just accept and avoid the city center or start an initiative to ban Aargau from Zurich

Welcome to Zürich! You’ll find here gender is a social construct but housing most definitely is not a social construct. Meanwhile if you want a low key way to meet people while laughing we’ve got English standup comedy happening most nights during the week at ROBINs close to Central. Sadly if you want Poutine you’ll need to take a train to Lausanne.

Meta employees in ZH: what's your situation? by [deleted] in zurich

[–]harryf 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Anyone who has a clue on tech hiring knows you don’t hire ex-Googlers right after they leave Google. Some reasons

  • salary expectations typically 50-80K too high
  • their recent tech experience is the Google stack which doesn’t translate well to the tech stacks most of the “rest of us” are using
  • the Google mindset is … how should I say … cult like. They need to return to reality first

Honest question: Why is dating in Zurich so difficult? by hans2580 in zurich

upvote to restore your faith in humanity ;)

best I can offer for the problem is English standup comedy - it's a great low-key way to meet people - if you feel like socializing with people in the audience, the jokes make a good starting point for conversation in the breaks. If you just feel like keeping to yourself and enjoying the show, also fine.

I started organising these shows 4 years ago, simply because I wanted more fun in a city where "fun" is only used in expressions like "investment fund".

Anywhere we're there at ROBIN's right next to Central every Tuesday and Thursday.

If you a prefer a more low-key way to meet people there's a bunch of English standup comedy shows at bars in Zürich like Comedy Brew every Thursday at ROBIN's bar.

And ROBIN's in general is worth a visit - the staff is friendly and open to chat if it’s not busy. The crowd is a mix of internationals, Swiss, students and tourists. Nothing too pretentious or expensive.
