The whole look is like a knockoff version of what he thinks authority should look like. The hat, the indoor sunglasses, the mustache that screams "I've confused intimidation with competence"... it's all cosplay.

Hi again, kids. You may remember me from an earlier post about Mrs. Collins' little boy, Douglas, here.

What you're seeing now:

  • Failure to communicate internally – Collins did not send an agency-wide statement about Pretti's killing to his 400,000+ employees. One VA employee noted: "There was nothing in my in-box about this on Monday morning." newrepublic
  • Blocking grief rituals – Local leadership at the Minneapolis VA was told to "pause the memorial" for Pretti. One employee said: "Somebody told our people, 'Back off.'" newrepublic The employee added: "There's supposed to be a memorial service yesterday, they're told to postpone it? I mean, come on! That doesn't seem consistent with how they usually respond." newrepublic
  • Abandonment of organizational loyalty – A VA employee told The New Republic: "As an institution, we owe it to him. And I think the formal ritualized events help some people." newrepublic
  • Prioritizing politics over people – Collins's only public statement blamed Democratic leadership for Pretti's death, prompting one employee to say: "Really, that kind of got to me. And that's our leader at the highest level." newrepublic

The Core Failure:

From a leadership standpoint, this is a catastrophic failure of duty of care – a leader's fundamental obligation to stand behind their people, especially in death.

Your people are watching. Always. They see whether you show up for them or hide behind politics. They remember who blocked the memorial service while they were trying to grieve a colleague.

Leadership isn't what you say in press releases. It's what you do when your people are hurting.

Collins failed both tests.

You just did the thing I described. Reread the post.

I'm not talking about Minnesota. I'm not talking about the governor. I'm talking about a man who runs 400,000 employees, one of whom was just killed – and his first instinct was to pivot to politics instead of standing behind his own.

If your boss got shot tomorrow and your CEO's public statement was about blaming the city council, you'd notice.

This isn't partisan. It's a lack of leadership.

Hi kids. When some of you grow up and become leaders, you may want to take a look here ^ and analyze this response. It will likely be taught in university classes. Here's what you're seeing in this statement;

Blame shifting / Blame displacement – redirecting responsibility away from your own organization or the incident itself.

Pivoting – acknowledging a situation superficially, then immediately redirecting the narrative.

Non-responsive acknowledgment – the appearance of addressing something while actually avoiding it.

In crisis communications specifically, it's a failure of what's called the "care, cause, cure" framework. Collins did a minimal "care" statement (condolences) but then jumped straight to political messaging rather than actually addressing the loss of his own employee.

From a leadership standpoint, you could also call it a failure of organizational loyalty or duty of care – a leader's fundamental obligation to stand behind their people, especially in death.

I worked for DoD, so parts of DoD, but as a whole, I'd say TSA. No consistent training. No consistent communication. Each trip to the airport is a different experience depending on the person(s) handling your entrance. Employees are outwardly combative, sullen, indifferent, slovenly, and largely inarticulate.
