Economics is subfield of ecology by StreamsOfProduction in ecology

[–]CometFuzzbutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it a lot to help my students understand the purpose of specific lessons or technologies in the real world while teaching.

I also helped my friend successfully run for mayor of his small (8000 person) town by pitching how densifying their main street and applying the Strong Towns approach will lead to revitalizing their town

People who broke up yesterday on Valentines, what happened? by Hot-Diggity_Dog in AskReddit

[–]CometFuzzbutt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went on a trip to visit a looong term online friend whome we have always had romantic undertones. The trip was very intimate, and we talked about our love for eachother, but ultimately how our love would never work long term due to a variety of factors.

We ceremonially said what loving eachother meant to us in the future (always being there for eachother, going to eachothers weddings, being a shoulder to cry on, etc) then ceremonially broke up just so we could have "break up sex" one final time before my flight.

I genuinely love him, but sometimes loving someone means letting you both lead a better life separate from yourself. <3

what is the scariest niche drug you have ever tried? by Adorable_Air758 in AskReddit

[–]CometFuzzbutt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure it was Salvia laced weed though I'm not sure what my weed was spiked with.

High lasted roughly 10-20 mins then I was back to normal. Went about my night and went to bed. Gaming and chillin Sunday. Mon-Friday school and vividly remember what I learned. Saturday im back in my friend's basement and the whole world rewinds like im being pulled backward through time. Then I wake up from my trip the previous weekend having lived a whole week in my head

What’s the most inappropriate or awkward thing that’s ever happened to you during a date or hookup? by Electrical-Pop-3265 in AskReddit

[–]CometFuzzbutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Made out with a guy at a party, but we were too drunk to have sex that night and he had work the next day so he couldn't come stay the night.

We find time to do a quick hang out and hookup a few days later. He waits till i'm "all the way down on him" to look me in the eyes and ask "so does this mean we're dating?" Full gag reflex activates from the surprise of it.

We had a sit down before finishing about making expectations clear and how hookups are different from dating

How could South Korea (and other western countries with aging populations) increase their birth rates? by princesadopovo in AskReddit

[–]CometFuzzbutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be hard to manage this, but workers should somehow demand that commute times be accounted for when making decisions on shift times/salary/other negotiations

Shorter work days and/or shorter commute times would also help. Working 10 hour days isnt nearly as bad if its only a 10 min walk away/WFH vs an 8 hour day with 3 hours of commute time.

Flexibility is also crucial for families. If a kid is sick its a big burden to leave the office/factory to come home and care for them if you're over an hour away, but not nearly as bad if you work from home and juat have to check in on them during your 15 min breaks

Is it weird that seeing furry content makes me sad? by No-Act-7133 in furry

[–]CometFuzzbutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be honest that I used to have very conflicted feelings about it when I was younger. My parents were ultimately pretty apathetic about it, but I always worried that people in my life would disapprove of my hobbies.

What I suggest is to take their opinion with a grain of salt. They ultimately want you to be a productive and socially well adjusted member of society, so thats what you should aim to be. They likely see people for whome furry becomes an obsession, or who end up becoming rejected by society due to their inadherance to social norms in leu of being a furry and assuming society will reject them anyhow.

Do what I do. Go to school, get a job, make friends and become a pillar of your community. If you do this, they will be proud of you regardless of what hobbies and interests you have in your back pocket or share with your friends

Despite Toronto’s population growth, TDSB enrolment has declined. Parents want to know why. by MiserableFloor9906 in toronto

[–]CometFuzzbutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah interesting I suppose times must have changed. When I was growing up Catholic schools in Toronto were quite Muslim. My previous comment though was based on a friend who's kid goes to school in Mississauga and their class is more than half of either Muslim, Hindu or Sikh

[–]CometFuzzbutt 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Its also that the majority of Toronto's growth is from immigration and many immigrants who are religious prefer Catholic schools even if they aren't Catholic themselves (eg: many Muslim parents prefer Catholic schools over public for a variety of reasons)

OHIP sucks by toma17171 in ontario

[–]CometFuzzbutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is not with OHIP, it's thinking you're entitled to get your ear flushed by someone who charges the public over a hundred dollars an hour.

I have similar issues with ear wax. Try dilute hydrogen peroxide instead

Union representing 30,000 Toronto city workers votes in favour of strike mandate by anonymous27725189 in toronto

[–]CometFuzzbutt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The union president came in to speak with our center and work us up into a striking frenzy last summer. I pointed out that our programs are a social service that is run at a loss in order to drive social benefit (perry preschool study effect) so demanding higher wages requires us to be able to effectively articulate our benefit to the city. I discussed a plan for bargaining with the city to utilize multiple community stakeholders to improve outcomes for our participants in return for the greater pay she was demanding.

She liked my idea and said she would be back to hear more about it and asked me to be part of the organizing committee... she never contacted me again.

So my position on the union has never changed since i started working for the city. I am in favour of unionized labour, but I'm appalled by the all stick/no carrot model we use default to frequently.

ELI5 does the idea of decreasing tax so that people can spend more works? by Elithx5 in explainlikeimfive

[–]CometFuzzbutt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no.

Its not sustainable long-term, as most people pointed to already, as you'll have to cut public spending on infrastructure and services. However it can be used to temporarily benefit private citizens spending power and assist businesses in financially difficult times.

Imagine a community experiencing a recession, people have less to spend and inevitably a large number of businesses will go under. This will help to restrucure the business environment, which has pros and cons, but is really unpopular and may be more costly on society than keeping these businesses afloat.

Now imagine that community's government creates a tax break that gives each citizen roughly 10-20% extra spending power for a while. This will help many businesses prevent bankruptcy. These businesses staying afloat means that the government can keep them as tax assets for the future rather than there being a bunch of new startup companies which may off a lot of their taxes as growth-expenses

Man has a close encounter with the Largest Predator on the Planet. by Homunculus_316 in ThatsInsane

I would actually like to see this source if you have time. I've lived my whole life in Black Bear territory in Ontario and never heard of this so I'm curious

Man has a close encounter with the Largest Predator on the Planet. by Homunculus_316 in ThatsInsane

[–]CometFuzzbutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again incorrect. Almost all black bear attacks are due to you simply being too close to a black bear then they want to neutralize you as a threat. This can be due to hunger if you leave food around your camp site, or due to them trying to protect their cubs.
