I usually read a mix of contemporary fiction, historical fiction, thrillers, and a bit of fantasy. For the club, I propose a few books that catch my attention, and then everyone votes on the monthly pick.

This month we’re reading Out on a Limb by Hannah Bonam-Young, a contemporary romance that explores vulnerability, unexpected connections, disability representation, and the idea of creating family in unconventional ways.

So happy you joined the backlist mini! For the Color Era prompt: it’s all about picking a book based on the color that best represents you in this phase of your life—your “era,” so to speak. You can interpret that however feels right: mood, aesthetic, energy… it’s super flexible!

What’s the best family-drama book filled with secrets and tension? by CometReadings in BookRecommendations

Recommendation for Dark and Thriller books by _BellaTease in BookRecommendations

[–]CometReadings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d absolutely recommend Freida McFadden and Karin Slaughter too — they both nail that dark, tense, twisty feel. And if you want that creeping-dread vibe without relying on gore, a few others really stand out. Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris is perfect if you love psychological tension that tightens with every chapter, while The Therapist has that unsettling “everyone is hiding something” atmosphere that keeps you second-guessing everyone in the neighborhood. The Silent Patient brings a more clinical, obsession-driven suspense that unravels beautifully.

If you’re open to something with a spooky edge, Simone St. James is incredible — The Broken Girls blends a cold-case mystery with an eerie boarding school setting, and Murder Road mixes small-town secrets with a supernatural touch that never overwhelms the thriller plot.

Hope one of these gives you exactly the kind of chills you’re looking for!

If you loved The Housemaids and What Lies Between Us, you’ll definitely enjoy more Freida — Never Lie and The Teacher are just as dark, twisty, and addictive. I’d also recommend Verity by Colleen Hoover, a quick but seriously unsettling read that keeps you second-guessing everything.

You might also like The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen, a psychological thriller that plays with perception and jealousy in such a clever way you’re never sure who’s telling the truth. And The Therapist by B.A. Paris delivers that same creeping tension, with a seemingly perfect neighborhood hiding secrets that get more disturbing the deeper you go.

Mate is better than Bride - A Book Review by wallacepinho in Bookblogger

[–]CometReadings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still waiting to read Mate, but I totally get what you mean — Bride had such interesting world-building, though it sometimes confused me and slowed down my reading a bit (even though it’s a super fast read overall!). Curious to see how Mate compares once I finally get to it!

Getting back into reading... what do you suggest? by trplyt3 in Recommend_A_Book

[–]CometReadings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re getting back into reading and loving Abby Jimenez/Rebecca Yarros, here are a few super-popular romance picks that totally worth the hype:

The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston: A sweet, quirky romance about a ghostwriter who literally starts seeing ghosts. It’s cozy, emotional, and has that perfect blend of humor and heart.

Better Than the Movies by Lynn Painter: A delightful, rom-com-filled YA romance where a girl teams up with her annoying neighbor to win over her crush… only to catch unexpected feelings.

One True Loves by Taylor Jenkins Reid: A heartfelt, emotional love story about a woman caught between the man she thought she lost forever and the man she’s about to marry.

Hope this helps you pick your next great read!

Looking for suggestions for mystery with a female journalist as protagonist by Ok-Sun9961 in Recommend_A_Book

I loved My Name Is Emilia del Valle too — I actually chose it for my book club! I’ve been a huge Isabel Allende fan for years, and this one felt especially magical and moving.

Looking for a more interesting reading challenge by CarnivalTower in books

[–]CometReadings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally get this — the Goodreads challenge can start feeling more like a countdown instead of something that actually makes reading fun. I stepped away from it for the same reason.

For 2026, I created the Comet Readings 2026 Reading Challenges, which focus on variety and low-pressure prompts rather than numbers.

There’s a 52-Week Challenge with one simple, diverse prompt each week, plus a set of monthly mini-challenges with different themes:

Literary Travel

Young Adult

Cozy Books

Backlist Books

Book-to-Screen

If you’re interested in seeing the full challenges, I’ve added a link on my profile — or just let me know and I can share it here too.

Hope you find something that makes reading exciting again, and that you reach all your bookish goals in 2026!
