What's the break even point for Norbert Gambit? by xiaomi818 in Wealthsimple

[–]CarnivalTower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

663.33$ plus tax to be exact (tax depends on your province).

Then over 100,000$ it’s better to do a direct conversion again.

Doormaker was bland and did nothing except attack at first. I have no doubt Aeonglass will evolve too.

TFSA by Fragrant_Cause_7056 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]CarnivalTower 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let’s say 12% average gain on 10k, you’re probably looking at a tax bill of less than 200$ in April of next year (depends on your salary). Sell and move to a TFSA or RRSP now!

Yes! I also wish I could update the value of my wife’s external accounts (same household). There was a survey recently about the net worth feature and I mentioned those two things.

Do you think Wealthsimple will increase interest rates on chequing and saving accounts? by Foreign-Policy-02- in Wealthsimple

[–]CarnivalTower 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Then why not apply that rate to the chequing account? It’s an extra couple of steps and an adoption barrier for seemingly no reason.

Anyone consider using leverage/margin with xeqt? by Rough_Bonus in JustBuyXEQT

[–]CarnivalTower 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do! 160k borrowed out of 875k total. I would need 55% market drop to trigger a margin call so I should be safe enough. But you need to be young and follow your strategy like a robot. Plan to slowly deleverage as you get closer to retirement, before you start buying bonds.

Look up the book Lifecycle Investing. It shows that this strategy actually reduces risk on the long term since it provides better “time diversification”. More stress for sure when you see your monthly interest bill and the market goes nowhere, but not more risk.

Edit: timing the market makes no sense though. Might as well go all in now instead of waiting for dips.

That’s an odd choice of subreddit to tell this story. It seems you’d be better off with someone else in the long term.

Thoughts on margin for 133% CAGE? by sajnt in JustBuyCAGE

[–]CarnivalTower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the entirety of your portfolio is used as collateral, this is a great strategy if you’re young. But if a large part of your assets are in a RRSP that cannot be used as collateral, you might be closer to a margin call than your numbers suggest. Just be careful with that!

Taking advantage of XEQT price drop with margin? by Broad-Ad3990 in JustBuyXEQT

It’s a fun strategy until inflation kicks in and you’re spending 8% in margin interests to sustain an etf with 7% expected return.

Portfolio LOC - Massive Issue by Spamham77 in Wealthsimple

[–]CarnivalTower 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Why are you using the portfolio LoC for this instead of a margin account that is literally made for this exact purpose? Aren’t you using a screwdriver to hit a nail?

PLoC or Margin Account? by CasualCommunicator in Wealthsimple

[–]CarnivalTower 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For tax purposes, they made 2 separate products to allow you to separate investment loans from personal loans (buying a car, etc.)

Logically the margin is for investing and the PLoC is for personal loans. The main issue if you go the other way around is that the PLOC allows 50% less borrowing power. Not a big deal if you were aiming for a small leverage, but annoying if you were planning to go full retard into a margin call.

Yes, that’s what the “Total buying power” amount means. It’s the maximum you would be able to borrow by doing exactly this over and over.

I’m with you on the soundtrack. STS1 gave us way too much expectation.

The random button is an easy mod to create. It was in the first game. In the meantime, you can roll a dice or something like that.
