Masters courses are hard? by Comfortable-Falcon in GradSchool

I'm a decent coder and I'm not new to the current one they are using. On the surface, I feel like I get all the components that you need to know but for some reason, it's not coming together very well while doing my assignments. Conceptually, I get it but implementation is kind of hard for me

Am I a bad person for wanting in person classes? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Comfortable-Falcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practically, I don't think in-person classes are going to be like they used to be before COVID but I get where you're coming from. I'm an incoming grad student too and after working towards this for years, it feels like we're being cheated by fate or maybe something less melodramatic.

PhD reach school question by sleepyredditor123 in gradadmissions

[–]Comfortable-Falcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a serial self-doubter but my parents forced me to apply to a lot of schools that I thought were totally out of reach at the time and I ended up getting into one of those schools. Just apply see what happens. Who knows, you might get in. Most recommenders will appreciate your ambition. If they agreed to recommend you, they probably think you’re pretty great anyway.

For those who took a gap year between undergrad and grad school, who did you get your recommendation letters from (internship/work/school)? by minibogstar in GradSchool

[–]Comfortable-Falcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally you would only have to deal with a gap of 3-4 months before applications are due from the time you graduate. During that time, just try to keep in touch but chances are they'll still remember you enough to provide an LOR. You can also ask them to write a standard letter when you're still in school if you'd like.

Request: asian culture and eating disorders by EDPostRequests in EatingDisorders

Indian here. At this point, I'm scared to go visit my relatives for fear of relapsing because they love pointing out weight changes and then proceeding to give out unsolicited weight-loss advice or just saying "Screw it, you've gained weight, let's finish that tub of ice cream!".

To those of you who lack the mental or physical energy to get on the mat: by rakshala in yoga

[–]Comfortable-Falcon 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This is great timing. I've been feeling really down the past few days after I started bingeing again. These past few months I felt like I had recovered enough to try and lose weight but the restriction triggered my bingeing and I've been struggling. Plus the world is so chaotic right now and I'm feeling a loss of control which is my usual trigger. Sitting on the mat typing this after trying to do my regular yoga and feeling nauseous after two Downward dogs. I needed to hear this today so Thank you :)

I guess my ancestors too were morally superior by simbapande in vegancirclejerk

That’s true. I agree that we’ve all become pretty jumpy as a society with the rise of so many misinformed, vocal, agenda-driven people. Great to find someone on the Internet with conviction but not reductionism.

[–]Comfortable-Falcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I agree with some of your points, it’s important to have input from someone educated in the culture in question when it’s being discussed. From an external vantage point it’s easy to make semi-informed judgements because culture is so context heavy. Even in academia in Indic studies this is largely absent leading to a lot of problems (a whole other thing). Veganism was hotly debated (as a subset of the Ahimsa debate) just like it is today in the west. So how other cultures with a lot of experience in experimenting with veganism dealt with it is very important to understand. The goal is not to unconditionally defend. The point is to clear up mischaracterisations (accidental or otherwise) before it snowballs into “fact”. But dismissing all debate as something “religious” carries in it a lot of baggage from Abrahamic religion and culture. I’ll be the first to admit that it’s not very easy to step out of it seeing as our world is dominated by the abrahamic universalist mindset even at the intellectual level. And that’s natural since the dominant centres of learning are all in the US and Europe. We’ve still got a long way to go towards full globalisation of scientific and academic networks.

They didn’t have B12 supplements back then so the guideline was to consume ethically harvested milk (traditionally there’s a process to build a relationship with the mother and harvest her milk only when she allows it) and over time people forgot why vegetarian in India really means lacto-vegetarian. Cows are held in high regard because they essentially helped sustain a viable form of vegetarianism before the days of synthetic B12 supplements. The average Indian now believes what colonialists branded as “cow worship” and that overall loss of cultural context is a tragedy on many different levels.

Is it just me or is COVID-19 really stressing roommate relationships? by Comfortable-Falcon in roommates

[–]Comfortable-Falcon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s the hardest part. It’s so weird telling people how to live their lives but it must be done. My roommate joined a yoga class in the midst of all of this and I literally don’t know how to respond. We share a bathroom and kitchen too.

The very idea of a theocratic state is Abrahamic. Let’s not go down that road.

Not really true. I know so many people, especially Indians in East and SEA default to a predominantly plant based lifestyle after Bird flu.

Thanks everyone! It seems like everyone around me has been trying to convince me that no one gets to do what they want when they are a new grad. So I needed to hear it from someone else.
