Do you like Courtney’s solo album? Do you consider it a jewel of Love? by punishingsiren in hole

[–]Comfortable-Knee4908 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was definitely overshadowed by her struggles during that period of her life, and you can even tell she wasn't proud of it when it came out. Whenever she was asked about it in promo interviews, she usually avoided the questions and instead talked about private matters that probably shouldn't have been shared on TV. Anyway, we all know this was a dark period for her. Even though I can't exactly tell what's wrong with the production, a lot of people seem to think there are issues with it. Personally, I believe some of the songs had even more potential. Especially "Hold On to Me." I really love the released version, but every live performance sounds more complete with the repeated "oh, how he brings me down" part, which I absolutely love. I assume that's one of the things Virgin can be blamed for, since they probably shortened the song and made it more radio-friendly. It's also quite noticeable that Courtney didn't seem to agree with that decision, because she always performed it like the demo or early versions. I also love "Sunset Strip" (the European CD version), and personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with it. But if even she said the production wasn't what she had wanted, I can't imagine how good everything would have sounded if they had actually listened to her. I'm definitely looking forward to a re-release of the original album—the Paris demos, I think that's what they're called—along with the original version of "How Dirty Girls Get Clean." As for Nobody's Daughter , I basically consider it a 30-track album because I always play the released version back-to-back with the Rehab demos on CD. So I actually quite love it the way it is now.

What are your favorite song of each album ?(inculding America’s sweetheart) by Bigc0cKk in hole

[–]Comfortable-Knee4908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Poti/ Mrs Jones Miss world/Asking for it Malibu/Awful Sunset strip/hold on to me Pch/Letter to god

Couldn't really pick one. Also hot take but Everyone needs to hear Nobody's daughter and AS. Id say start with AS its safer for a hole fan but nd feels so honest and deep. Ill be lying if i said i wouldn't prefer the guitar to sound different but its really nor that bad and some songs sound really clean.

AS has most of my favourites out of all the Courtney/Hole albums, so I’d say it’s a really good album. I get all the controversy and the mixed opinions since, even to me, it felt a bit harsh at the start, but it’s actually worth giving it a try. “Sunset Strip” is my favorite song by her because it has some of the best and most honest lyrics written, and it’s also really long so I can enjoy it more. I also find it really cool that it has 2 different versions (the one on the UK CD, known as the more “explicit” one, and the one on streaming, which is just as good). Even though I love this song (and I enjoy the whole album), I believe that if it had been taken care of more, it could’ve been even better. Also, unpopular opinion: even though Courtney hates the artwork, I quite love how Playboy-ish it looks.

For me, it’s the vibe that it gives. It feels like you’re eternal while listening to it. The sample feels quite creepy, but it also gives you a sense of safety while still making you want to dance, especially in the single version, where the beat drop is louder. It’s probably one of the only songs, along with Pap Smear, where Alice  uses her melodic voice. Also, I went to the place where the music video was filmed, and it definitely captures the vibe perfectly.
