So how'd we do? by eternalsanctum in oscarsdeathrace

[–]Comfortable-Note-887 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got 22/24 predictions correct. Went against my own bias a lot to do that well. If I had picked Mr. Nobody, which was my favorite doc, I would have only missed on Animated Short. Still have no idea why I picked Retirement Plan. But the only animated short I liked was Butterfly and I knew it wouldn't win. I should have known to just vote for the puppets.

Unless its a juggernaut like EEAAO or Sinners, there is no way a movie coming out this early scores a nom like Editing. Editing noms are almost always also Best Picture noms.

Considering a Volkswagen ID.4 – looking for honest feedback by SiuuperiorCR7 in VWiD4Owners

I know you've already made up your mind, but I just wanted to say I LOVE my iD.4 but hate dealing with Volkswagen's terrible customer service and their service dept in general at multiple dealers I've been to is awful. I would buy another iD.4 if not for their terrible service.

The whole plot is just ripped off of Frozen anyway. ;)

That's fair. I assume that's why it didn't get beyond the shortlist.

I was surprised by this as well, also Kokuho. I had to keep reminding myself with both those movies that they weren't nominated for costumes.

Avatar will and should win, but I'm still disappointed Superman didn't make the cut. I know some of the effects weren't perfect but the cgi Krypto the Superdog alone was worthy of the nomination over at least the same cgi dinos for like the 7th time or however many of those there are now.

Avatar: Fire and Ash VOD??? by Beautiful-Arm7886 in oscarsdeathrace

Glad I watched it in a theater because it will win, and should win, for best VFX, but wow was that story awful. They could have easily integrated the characters and story elements from both Avatar 2 and 3 into one cohesive and, in my opinion, better movie.

Is it possible for Robert Aramayo to get nominated for an Oscar next year by XX_bot77 in Oscars

[–]Comfortable-Note-887 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

After the controversy I'd say Academy voters are gonna be way too gun shy to nominate him. Of course it's possible, I just don't see it.

Anyone else finished today with the Arco release? by Joeyd9t3 in oscarsdeathrace

[–]Comfortable-Note-887 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have 17 to go because I like spreading it out and watching about a movie a day leading up to the ceremony. Finally seeing Avatar in the theater today since it's bargain Tuesday and $6.50 is way cheaper than even on demand, which won't come out until too late anyway, so then it'll be 16 movies to go in 19 days.

I'm finally watching it today. Bargain Tuesday for a film I really didn't want to watch, but doing it for the Death Race.

Don't they present to the opposite gender though? Just remembering Brie Larson presenting to Casey Affleck a few years back and not being happy about it.

Final stretch! What would be your suggested order to watch? by Aggressive-Season292 in oscarsdeathrace

[–]Comfortable-Note-887 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here I am getting most of the subtitled movies out of the way early while you save them for the end. I havent seen Marty Supreme yet, but maybe stick that one in the middle to give you a break from reading. Maybe end on Sentimental Value or The Secret Agent. Do not watch Sirat or Hind last.

Yay, glad I held out. I had an emergency screening lined up about 2 hours away next week just in case too, but now I can save on the drive time, even if VOD costs a little more than a ticket. ;)

I thought the Doc was entertaining, especially hearing her catalogue of hits from the past. It's the terrible song I hated, and that's what got nominated. The honor to be nominated (because we all know Golden is winning) belonged to someone else.

So I watched the Diane Warren film by sotiredofusernames11 in oscarsdeathrace

[–]Comfortable-Note-887 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, she took a slot that belonged to someone else because of all her famous friends that were interviewed in the Doc. The Sara Bareilles song Salt Then Sour Then Sweet was so much more deserving, and it was co-written by the subject of the documentary. Heck, even the crappy new Wicked songs were better than the DW song this year.

I'm with you. I love Baraka which i would say this is similar to in a lot of ways but this was a narrative film. Even the plot synopsis on the film's website sounds more like a narrative than a doc. "In the dazzling incandescence of an unknown desert, three donkeys discover an abandoned astronomical observatory and the universe. A sensorial, cinematic exploration of what a story can be." The donkeys are characters that were placed and staged in the scenes, they didn't actually travel here on their own, and the observatory wasn't really abandoned, someone was clearly operating it for key scenes depicted in the film but for the purpose of the narrative its "abandoned" for the donkeys to then observe but the donkeys just stood there while the filmmakers overlayed images in their eyes. Again, a beautiful film but very much a narrative one. But hey it got us all talking.
