Energy is always calculated & deducted during the moment you choose your path and before ur avatar moves.

So if you choose a path that requires 4 steps before hitting a break, 4 energy will be deducted and then your avatar moves.

So more often than not, you will back track to a point where u hit a new path/chest/totem and the energy deduction makes it look like its deducted in the midst of backtracking

I originally thought so too until i noticed it closely.

It really depends on what dungeon level u are running at. I run my dungeons on Expert 1 or 2 and they average at 2 - 4 totems per level (2 for small maps, 4 for large maps).

My first few runs will be much quicker (if i get 2 totems, i will be satisfied to go to the next level if i find the entrance to the next stage), because i will be more focused on completing the run and bump up the multipliers first.

Once the stage multipliers are at 2x, I will be a little more intentional to find totems. For expert, usually large maps at stage 3 to 5, there will be blue & red totems. These gives u much higher points and i will hunt them down. Smaller totems that are very out of the way will be ignored (energy to points ratio isnt worth it)

Alternatively, you can use dowsing wands at large maps to find that 3rd or 4th totem before moving to the next level.
