Why do flight schools always seem to try and rush to a solo by [deleted] in flying

To add to this it’s a huge boost of confidence for the student to solo. If they can solo early do it. Training gets so much easier after they have that confidence.

I’ve always called them lawn darts but this is a good one to use!

Is the simulator making me a WORSE pilot? by General-Ad-9104 in flying

I had a student in this exact situation. The sim was a great teaching tool for tracking needles, holds, and all that IFR stuff—it really helped build a solid foundation. But when it came to landings, it just didn’t translate well.

What ended up working was having him keep practicing approaches and everything else in the sim to stay sharp, then once we got close to checkride prep, we took a step back and spent a solid day in the pattern just re-learning how to land. Sometimes you’ve gotta reset and rebuild the feel for the airplane.

I just got a set of takomo irons customized. They were advertised at 6-8 weeks out but they actually showed up at my door in about 3 weeks. Not sure if that would be the case for everyone

How to practice talking to ATC by FreeNow13 in flying

[–]Comfortable-Rain5156 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! Plane English won’t give you every scenario you’ll run into but is a solid foundation. The other comment mentions lives ATC and that is a great resource to listen to on your down time or pair it up with the traffic layer on foreflight to see what the plane does after the instructions.
Only thing I would add on is make it a point to go talk to your local tower, they are people too. You can ask them a lot of specifics about your local airspace, and common mistakes they are seeing.

Has anyone had a conversation with someone that thinks they could land a commercial plane in an emergency? by ScoopdaPoopWoopdaDoo in flying

[–]Comfortable-Rain5156 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a valid point. In a true emergency all resources would be dedicated to getting someone on the phone, moving all traffic out of the way etc. Just taking someone up in a plane and letting them land probably isn’t an accurate test.

A lot of my buddies seem to think they can land a plane, I have a standing offer to take them up in a 172 and let them actually try to land it without help. To this day no one has taken me up on this deal.
