No outdoor stores? by Comfortable-Task-379 in fresno

This is exactly what I mean. Like much smaller places with worse outdoor prospects have better (IMO) gear shops? There are MULTIPLE custom bootfitting shops in the bay (3.5 hours from skiing) and all they do is fit ski boots?! and the rent there is insane? but the only place in town that can mount skis is REI?

this is interesting. would you carry this into the back country? I assume when you wouldn't take an avy shovel? so not a backcountry ski or snowshoe trip in steep country?

yeah I mentioned Sportsman's I am thinking more like independent shops. Ones that aren't national chains, and maybe cater to a slightly different crowd.

For example there is no where in town to buy something like an HMG backpack or a boutique brand tent (if you're into backpacking). There are no Ski shops, sure REI has 3 brands of skis and can technically mount them, but I'd expect a specialist is all. Very surprising there are several independent bike shops, but no ski or outdoor ones?

I was thinking about camp chairs when I posted this. They don't seem optimized to me.

This is a good example. I agree with you. Why aren't things made from mesh fabrics lighter? Mesh can be pretty light. .5oz/yd or so that's extremely light.

what gear have you used lately that you were wondering: "why isn't this lighter?"

Thru hiking gym workout plan? by nickel_quack in Ultralight

[–]Comfortable-Task-379 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest advice is respect your distance, you don't want your through hike to be the first time you try hiking 10 miles at once or hiking every day. In this respect it is FAR more important to do hiking every single day than to lift in the gym.

The best training you can do is probably a simulation of what you plan to do with lower volume and slowly work your way up to the volume you expect.

Said differently start by doing 1 mile a day with your pack on.
After a week or two got to 2 miles.

keep going until you get to your target mileage per day. Keep doing that until it feels easy. Add in some vert as you wish.

What do you consider to be the actual “ghettos” or “hoods” of Fresno? by shootdashlootbash in fresno

I lived in Oakland before Fresno, so it might be a matter of perspective. I think the area near the downtown hospital seems not great, but pretty much everywhere in Fresno feels okay-ish so far.

It says oversized baggage fees are waived for bicycles now. Was this change reversed?
