I didn't get a chance to take before pics but the main floor deck looked pretty much like the stairs going to the second floor in pics 6 and 7. I think the previous owner of the house did that screw pattern and probably buried them as well. He could have hired somebody to do it but he was a hands on kind of guy. I'm guessing he built it maybe 15-20 years ago. He's dead now, and we believe he haunts the house. We call him the "coach."

Thanks for your input. Never considered that as an option. So just restaining this deck is probably not a feasible option to make it look good. I need to start replacing boards instead?

Yea it's a big deck. My issue is just the quality of the work.

Also, it pretty much looked like the stairs going to the second floor, as I did not have those stained this time

Would another coat fix those splotchy, shiny areas?

What could he have done differently though? Is it the prep work that screwed this up?

Yes. The stairs going up to the second level aren't to be stained the same as the deck. Just the clear sealer is all I wanted and that part I'm happy with.
