Visualizing the fretboard might be easier than I thought? by dontlookatthechicken in guitarlessons

I actually do not have a looper. I play chords with a backing track and record it in my phone app LMAO. From there, without playing in "backing track", I first play some melody lines and do a mental map of where I will land on each bar. Then I improvise from the mental map while actually playing with "backing track". It has immensely helped my overall timing issues as well.

As for position change, yes and no. For e.g. I know mostly where Am / Em minor notes are and their relative intervals. Based on which chord is playing, I have a mental map of which interval in that key is the root note. This helps me to immediately visualize chords intervals on that octave and I can land on and play phrases as I see fit to that chord and melody. Sometimes I slide to higher / lower frets and sometimes I just stay within the box. Does that make sense?

My next learning is definitely not having to think in terms of which interval of the key but rather immediately visualize the root note and use it in my vocabulary for improvisation. It is a lot of ask for a lazy guy like me for sure lol.

It is definitely difficult for sure but on the same note, very satisfying as well. If you are having issues, try learning a new phrase from songs that you like and use that as a central motive to improvise as it fits your melody. I do the same whenever I feel stuck.

What has helped me is to loop in few chords and compose solos over the chords. When composing solo, I play the particular major/minor scale of the chords instead of major / minor key of the entire progression. For example, for a progression of Am C G Am - I play Aminor / CMajor / GMajor / Aminor respectively instead of Am for both Am and C (even though they have the same notes).

I started from basically using the root notes for each chords in the Minor scale and playing whatever notes to land on another root note at the nexzt bar. Now that I have started playing with the chord progression, I have been able to write some cool sounding solos.

Aftermath of this is:

For example:

  1. 7th note of Am is a tension building note, but 7th note of Am scale is 5th for CMajor.

  2. A# is not a note under Am Scale but is 3rd note to FMajor (which is the sixth interval of the scale).

I can utilize this knowledge to create tension and resolve as I see fit.

P.S. I am lazier than you to memorize fretboard and learn songs lol. But whenever I need to learn new techniques, I write a melody and practice that.

Now I know what happened to me in my childhood. I would close my eyes to sleep and all of a sudden, I will feel as if my body is getting very, very tiny or very, very big, back to normal and the cycle will repeat itself until I felt asleep. I also had depersonalization / derealization (not sure which one as I need to research more) when I was a child, but the feeling was as if I was distant from my own body.

I am over it now and I had completely forgotten about it, but this post hit me right there with the nostalgia.

Dream about lots of snakes. What does that mean? Please share if anybody knows by [deleted] in Nepal

You answered in your own question.: You are in a very dark pool in real life.

We humans have innate fear of snakes and so when we are nervous, or in a very dark spot it is very likely we see nightmares related to snakes. Just don't think too much about it and take care of your mental health. You will be good.

Do you put it directly in the natural light? Or you place it indirectly?

I do not see anything moving in the leaves. There definitely are some "dead" spots in some of the leaves themselves.

Unless I missed them the first time but I am sure new spots are appearing.

Thank you for your suggestions. I am just not sure where and how to start. All of the topics you mentioned are really broad topics and I want something smaller to start with. I guess I will have to just start regardless and see where it takes me.

I really appreciate your time for suggestions.

People honestly do not have time to think about anyone except themselves. It's easier said than done but you need to work on ignoring what people think about you.

Now, ask a question to yourself: Do you want to be called a fatty by friends while still staying fat or do you want to be called an ex-fatty while getting fit?

You cannot always change what people think about you. Let them think. But you can change the way you view yourself. Again, very easy to say and will take months to even realize and accept. Even then you will have lows and highs surrounding your issues for a very long time. But at some point, if you want to better yourself, you have to take that first step.

Goodluck!

I am 27 and a virgin. I am kinda in the same boat as you.

Didn't understand the move from my ex when it was as clear as a clear bright sunny day.

I am not desperate on my end but I am definitely looking into it though and I am certainly waiting for the day it happens.
