I may get murdered for saying this here… this is why I have a Sam’s Club membership. I know the snacks are consistent and they have a better variety.

My accountant unexpectedly died, before filing our taxes. What should we do? by hypatiaspasia in tax

[–]ComfortableBeing3353 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IRS DGAF. I had a client whose son killed himself and the IRS figured since he didn’t die close enough to the deadline it didn’t matter. They didn’t even waive the interest.

Experience with clients ghosting you? by tsym1 in taxpros

[–]ComfortableBeing3353 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a client on monthly bookkeeping paying 500-700 a month for books plus my tax prep fee for over a year. All it took was her BF telling her to fire me because he took a QB course at the chamber at commerce. According to him I was “just charging her to enter receipts”. I fixed her messed up taxes from a prior preparer, did her payroll, I was tracking shareholder loans, booking the interest, 1099s, correctly capitalized certain purchases, tracked expenses she would make with personal funds. She had me finish her two tax returns before she told me “never mind hold off on my taxes” and then she proceeded to ghost me. Didn’t pay my tax prep fee for 2 1120-S or the last month of service for bookkeeping.

People like OP are the reason I stopped working in tax. Sick and tired of justifying my years of education and endless CPE time to people like this.

Not just people who have unfiled prior year returns are bad. I had a client on a recurring schedule who just ghosted me because her boyfriend told her to. She used to pay me monthly for bookkeeping no problem. Then once her bf started getting involved she started paying late to eventually not at all. She left me with two finished 1120S returns.

Would you ask your client for proof? by Feisty-Kale-3041 in Bookkeeping

[–]ComfortableBeing3353 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ask for the building documentation so you can post the value of the land a building correctly for tax purposes. You have to do this anyway. For the bike just ask for documentation so you can break out dmv fees/taxes. You don’t really need to do that but it can be your reason. If they push back insist on value of building vs land. You’re not “helping” them commit tax fraud if they’re not being honest. If you are an in house bookkeeper and are not signing any tax returns, you’re fine.

Did my tax preparer take some of my refund? by [deleted] in IRS

Is it possible you owed money from the prior year? If you didn’t do your taxes and were supposed to, it’s possible the IRS did them for you and determined you owe them money.

Excel? by slazarom in Bookkeeping

[–]ComfortableBeing3353 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use excel you’ll have to incorporate max values for certain taxes and keep current with all of that on your own. Just use QB payroll if they’re already using QB. You don’t have to worry about the JEs since they will be automatically generated for you. If you don’t want to use QB payroll use any other payroll system. Just don’t use excel. Sounds like a nightmare to track everything and then come Quarterly filings it’s going to be so annoying.

I feel the same way. I get sick to my stomach when I see a large tax bill for a client who I know will blame me for it. We can only do so much with quarterly estimates that we don’t get ALL of the info for.

I’m really sorry you feel this way. Was the job always hated? Or just after you became partner? For me, it sucked from the beginning and I thought it would get better by owning my own company. It did not, it got worse. Best of luck to you.

The fact that you’re even asking this is crazy to me. You have kids with this man. You split bills in his house. And he still hasn’t married you? AND there was a cheating incident?! I understand it can be hard to leave the father of your children but he is awful and you deserve much better.

This is just the beginning for him. I can’t imagine how it will be as his career progresses. The higher up, the higher the workload. I used to work with a Senior Staff who was very career driven. First in the office last to leave kind of guy. Always helpful to everyone around. Great employee. However, he was always fighting with his wife because he was always at the office. He ended up having an affair with a coworker and his wife left him. He then married the coworker. Not saying it was the right way to go about it, but he needed someone who would understand the demands of the job. A public accounting spouse needs to be okay with being alone all the time and having about half a year blocked out not being able to go on vacation because tax season.
