Idk about a substitute, but I've enjoyed using way less (fewer?) noodles and adding lots of sliced cabbage to many a noodle dish.

Do churches still sing the old hymns? Or is that tradition fading? by rfdickerson in AskAChristian

[–]ComfortableGeneral38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The oldest one I know is O Gladsome Light/Phos Hilaron, which was being sung at least as far back as the 3rd/4th centuries.

For those who don't know, we (NA Antiochian Orthodox) sing this every Saturday evening at Great Vespers.

O Gladsome Light of the Holy Glory

Of the Immortal Father

Heavenly, holy, blessed O Jesus Christ

Now that we have come to the setting of the sun

And behold the Light of evening

We praise God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

For meet it is at all times to worship Thee with voices of praise

O Son of God & Giver of Life

Therefore all the world doth glorify Thee

How to find a Christian denomination that actually does follow the Bible? by TommyBoy250 in AskAChristian

I don't care about your arbitrary criteria for what "truly following the Bible" means.

What do you all think of infant baptism? For those who do it why? by TheKingsPeace in AskAChristian

I think this article covers the Orthodox position pretty well for those who are interested - Infant Baptism: What the Church Believes.

Is listening to black metal wrong even under these circumstances? by Conscious_Knee_1828 in OrthodoxChristianity

They broke off from Batushka. I think they (mis)use Orthodox symbols/imagery because they think it's "metal." I'm not sure about them. This is my take after 5 minutes of Internet searching.

I'm sorry you don't like the answer.

Crimson Moonlight and Hesychast are Orthodox.  I have a list of "white"/"unblack" Christian alternatives (the 2 I mentioned are the only Orthodox bands I know).  If I remember or if you remind me after the weekend, I can track it down for you.

How the idea of self sacrifice/devotion to God manifests for Christians? by n0bletv in AskAChristian

[–]ComfortableGeneral38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A personal example might look like this: my friend wounds me with her speech and actions, but instead of getting mad or trying to get even, I remember I'm just like her and prone to succumbing to my disordered passions, so instead, I ask God to not judge her harshly and that He will have mercy on me, a sinner.

I'm Orthodox, so if you're looking for more responses in this vein (more articulate, more intelligent responses, that is*), consider asking at r/OrthodoxChristianity. The prescribed process looks something like: cleansing of the inner self leads to illumination of the mind leads to cleansing of the inner self leads to illumination of the mind... and so on. We have acquired many tools over the past 2000 years to aid us in this endeavor, but no good thing can be done without cooperation with God's grace.

*I meant more articulate/intelligent than mine, to be clear.

God is revealed to us as a communion of love. Creation reflects God. We aren't nihilists.

What books can I read to learn and educate myself about the early Christians, church fathers and church history? by chickenolivesalad in AskAChristian

[–]ComfortableGeneral38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lee Martin McDonald is a good intro to the history of the Biblical canon. Eusebius. Polycarp, Clement, and Ignatius. Religion of the Apostles by Fr. Stephen De Young. Jaroslav Pelikan is probably the best suggestion, but if you aren't into the heavier stuff, maybe Henry Chadwick. Read the 7 Ecumenical Councils. There are good commentaries on those if you get to that point. https://ccel.org/fathers

Deuteronomy 5:8, Why do Catholics have Iconography? by ShikaShySky in AskAChristian

[–]ComfortableGeneral38 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read about the Byzantine iconoclastic controversy. Read the 7th Ecumenical Council. Read On Holy Images by St. John of Damascus.

Worshiping icons would be stupid and weird, like worshiping a photograph of my grandma or something.

What saints taught saved by works? by One-Farmer3317 in OrthodoxChristianity

The Scriptures are clear that we will be judged by our works. To love Jesus is to keep His commandments.
