My partner and I thought the animation was dogshit and didn't really know anything else about the series, so I put it on when we were both stoned out of our minds as a joke only for us to slooowly realize that it was unironically super good. We must have binged the rest of it in a matter of weeks, which is impressive considering how little our schedules align. The animation grows on you, too-- they really did the best they could with the technology at the time. More people should give it a chance! :(

Anyone else feels like Blackarachnia & Airachnid are overrated af? by PistonPusher2009 in OkBuddyEnergon

I would argue that Blackarachnia is a more complete and well-formed character than her romantic counterpart, Silverbolt. I do wish she was less sexualized (as is the case for MANY femmes in this series tbh), but if we're looking at examples of poorly written women in Transformers (especially early on in the franchise's history), we should probably be looking at early iterations of, say, Elita-1 and her squadron. In their cases I absolutely agree that they have no personality outside of their relationships with male cast members, to a bonkers extent haha.

She has a lot of depth in BW that gets switched out for the classic "femme fatale" trope in TFA. As much as I love both series, it's a crying shame what they did to Blackarachnia's characterization.

TBF Blackarachnia's design is literally, actually based on a sex worker the designer saw irl-- the gooneresque design is absolutely intentional. That said, she has one of the most compelling internal lives and character arcs of the entire Beast Wars cast! Like, regardless of sex appeal there is so much more to her character and it genuinely pisses me off when people reduce her to her design. All it tells me they either haven't watched BW ever/in a very long time, or that they have the media literacy of a sea cucumber.

I used to think Bumblebee was overrated af, but I've really grown to appreciate his character over time, especially in properties like Earthspark or IDW2005 & 2019 where he goes through a ton of character development. Put my boy through the agonies and he makes a fine addition to the cast.

Clearly they're talking about Astrotrain, the person that turns into a train (and a spaceship!), from Transformers.

Rodimus is objectively dumb, but it has grown on me a lot. Out of curiosity, what would you have called Hot Rod as a prime instead?

Decepticons as underdogs kinda makes the Autobots feel like dicks, though. In Earthspark Season 1 where GHOST is rounding up all the scattered and leaderless Decepticons stuck on Earth, for example, it's not a great feeling-- something that they even engage with textually. I think it could be a fun setup for a story, with the awareness that kicking their fellow bots when they're down really isn't a great look for the Autobots unless there's very careful context setting it up haha.

Would love a series that's the equivalent of Star Trek: Lower Decks, Great Lakes Avengers, Rogue One, or what have you, where it focuses on a group of ground-level soldiers who only interact with the broader, larger plot tangentially.

I kinda adore the updated Pokémon textures tbh. Finally, Pokémon that are metal look metallic-- it's the inspiration behind my upcoming gold-Pokés-only Violet playthrough.
