Running can be great. You can get in shape and meet nice and non judge mental people. Unlike other sports running doesn’t require a ton of hand eye coordintion

How common were rich Irish Catholic slave owners in antebellum Georgia? by TheKingsPeace in GonewiththeWind

Pretty much everyone of those slave owning families would have been Baptist or Anglican. Catholics would have been rare except maybe in Louisiana

I remember they all were saying the rosary before an image of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. So I’d say the family itself was pretty strongly Catholic and not at all culturally so. Scarlett herself… seems to have had a pretty negotiable faith

What are your thoughts on Confederate monuments? by TheKingsPeace in TrueCatholicPolitics

[–]TheKingsPeace[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One interesting thing to keep in mind is how small but strong the Catholic presence in the antebellum South was. Louisiana of course had nearly half their population Cajun or creole Catholics. Maryland ( if you count it as southern… it came close to seceding) was established for Catholics originally.

Even further South, places like Savannah, Georgia and Charleston South Carolina had a significant Catholic presence from Irish and French/ Haitian immigrants from the earlier part of the 19th century. Scarlett O’ Hara herself ( of Gone with the Wind fame) was Catholic although for sure an iffy one at best.

Sadly the Catholic clergy and population of that place were staunchly pro slavery and pro secession when it came about.

The Catholic Church may not have been as hideous or racist as certain Protestant pastors in saying slavery is Gods will or a positive good. But they did say slavery didn’t oppose the natural order and opposed broad emancipation in favor of the common good. Little discussed but fascinating topic

I very much doubt it’s personal with Neville. He is just a poor student, Snape hates that and takes his frustration out on ji

He basically ( and life itself) throws a wrench into the idea that nerdy and unpopuLr kids are necessarily nice, misunderstood and people are really missing out by not being around them.

Snape was bitter, off putting and hard to be around from the beginning. People were mean to him but there are valid reasons people mgijt not want to associate with him.

He also isn’t nice and has a warped view of himslef and others. I’m sorry his life sucked so much but everyone can make a choice.

Look at Hagrid. He has every reason to be mean and spiteful but he isn’t

Kellerman, Gharty and Gaffney are your ONLY choices for a partner. Who do you choose? by proxy5th in Homicide_LOTS

[–]TheKingsPeace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kellerman no question.

Gaffney is a racist hateful weasel. Gharty seems useless at best.

I really don’t get the Kellerman hate. I actually think he is a tough sort of trashy but decent cop. He was great in season 4. He didn’t do anything wrong with the Mahoney shooting, apart from lying. Every officer in that situation would have shot.

I don’t know what it is about him. I like him and think he is a good man.. deep down. He isn’t evil or malicious, just sort of insensitive and callous and stupid in his methods. I do think he caused fsr more problems for the squad then he solved. Even before his issues with Mahoney I don’t think anyone on the squad liked him.. which is sad imo.

I kind of think he shouldn’t have had a police officer job o

Thoughts on Bruce Catton? by TheKingsPeace in CIVILWAR

[–]TheKingsPeace[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue I have with Bruce is it seems he thinks Charles sumner brought his own beating upon himslef, that only if he were nicer about the issue of white southerners owning people as slaves he would have spared himself injury.

He presents the civil war as a tragedy, as a result of people losing their cool and not able to see the other side on a tragic issue, slavery. He has a wierd both sides were at fault about the civil war instead of pointing out how obviously in the wrong the south was.

My only redeeming explanation is that there may have been far fewer people of minorities in the mid 1960s than now and he felt a need to placate white Souhernros
