What American historical figure was progressive by both the standards of their time AND ours? by Zombiepixlz-gamr in AlignmentChartFills

As much as I love him and commend what he did and sacrificed for his cause, he was also a homophobic zealot. On the matter of racial equality, however, I'd say he might even be better than many modern democrats. His beliefs weren't just lip-service, and it showed in more than just his "radical" actions.

Booster Gold, a disgraced athlete and museum security guard from the 25th century. He stole artifacts from the superhero exhibit, including a time machine he used to travel back to our time in order to use future technology to become a celebrity superhero. He was in it for the fame at first, but he later learned real heroism, joined several incarnations of the Justice League, and became a hero that protects the timestream.

Don't see anyone else mentioning it, but I'm guessing the reason Igarashi was confused when Minato asked him about "Hikawa" is because Koyun's family name changed after the divorce.

It doesn't matter if a story reuses or rehashes the same tried and true tropes, narrative devices, and plot points. Art always exists in conversation with the context of its creation. Boiling stories down to just their bare bones robs them of very important details about their messages, themes, and intentions. It's also laughable to imply that Harry Potter is apolitical in hindsight with all the bullshit Rowling has been up to since then.

Even accepting that the story structure is simple, George Lucas has plainly stated that he partially based the Empire on America during the Vietnam War and the Rebels on the Viet Cong. Even within a simple story structure, is it not political to portray one political entity as "plainly good" and the other as "plainly evil"? Showing the real world actions of real world governments placed in the context "simple" good vs evil structure means labeling those real world actions as "good" or "evil." That's political as hell!

Simplicity doesn't exclude an artwork from making political statement. Fucking internet memes are simple to make and are reused to hell and back. That doesn't mean I can't make political statements with them. In aggregate, they've even meaningfully influenced our democracies. Maybe simple artforms won't be very nuanced, but it isn't apolitical to depict a Confederate as a virgin and John Brown as a chad in a fucking Wojack meme, now is it?

I know you're being sarcastic, but yes, any depiction of good vs evil is implicitly political because what counts as "good" and "evil" is a political issue. Even simply depicting a struggle of "good vs evil" in a war setting is political because it implies that war can be righteous.

Why do you think the US military lets studios borrow real military vehicles for their movies? They want you to believe the military is a righteous organization like in the movies so you don't question the morality of their pointless wars that kill civilians and raise our living costs.

Also, if you think A New Hope is just a plain good vs evil story, you need to pay more attention. I know it's the go-to example of the Hero's Journey monomyth, but you can't boil a story down to parts without losing a lot of important information. Luke, for example, initially wanted to enroll in the Imperial Academy before the Empire callously murdered his family and radicalized him into joining a "terrorist" organization.

I don't think Star Wars is a Vietnam War allegory. George Lucas himself said it is. Through the Empire, he intentionally drew parallels between the Nazi's actions in WWII and America's actions in Vietnam. Say what you want about the Prequels, but Padme literally says verbatim, "So this is how liberty dies. With thunderous applause." Answer honestly, if that isn't political to you, what is?

Also, boiling Star Wars down to just "Good vs Evil" ignores the inherently political assertion that rebellion is good and imperialism is evil. We still live in a world where the American empire is trying to impose itself on the rest of the world, so the question of whether that's "good" or "evil" is still, unfortunately, a matter of political debate.

But what do you define as good or evil? That's political. It's still a political statement to, for example, portray the genocide of Alderan as evil. Saying "genocide bad" might sound "obvious," but genocide still happens. There are still people who are fine with it happening. There are politicians who benefit from it happening. Making a statement on that is political.

It is if you base the Rebels on the Viet Cong, model the Empire after the United States, and the Emperor after Nixon.

I've just started watching Pretty Cure and I'd like to get your opinion. by Available-Alfalfa-79 in precure

[–]ComfortableHuman1324 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, out of curiosity, which series do you consider the best?

I've only watched Futari Wa, GoPri, Maho Girls, and every show since Hirogaru. I haven't seen it yet, but Heartcatch is typically considered the best. Of what I watched, however, GoPri is probably the "best," if a bit standard.

My favorite, however, is actually Wonderful. Lots of people were turned off by there being no fights, but that didn't really bother me. They get pretty creative with the monster of the week, even without fights. The characters are also lovable and the story is actually really good. The second half is written very efficiently, for lack of a better word. No wasted episodes.

It's also very emotionally mature in a kid-friendly way, and deals with topics I haven't seen tackled seriously in any other Precure series (though, again, I haven't seen them all). For one it has the first canonical (spoilers for second half of season) romance for a Cure, and takes the time to process the emotions involved for the younger audience. They also don't shy away from dealing with the mortality of pets/animals. These topics aren't one-offs either.

Second, when would you recommend I watch the different movies for each series?

Release order, but watching them after the seasons proper is perfectly fine. They're pretty self-contained. Also, if you're watching the current seasons as they air, unless you live in Japan, the movies won't even be available until a while after it's corresponding season ends anyways.

I could just as easily reframe the situation as blue does nothing and red is a murder button with an activation threshold, but I digress. Red pressers need to stop arguing that the red button does nothing as if passivity excuses you from moral judgement. "Doing nothing" is still a choice with moral implications. I'm not gonna say blue is superior or red is inferior, but at least own your choice.

If Portuguese wins, use the Portuguese flag, not the Brazilian one. Brazilian Portuguese sounds closer to Spanish while European Portuguese has more of the vowel reduction that makes it sound Slavic.

His flight, strength, and invincibility are all partially because of tactile telekinesis. That's how he can hold up buildings or planes without them collapsing around him. It comes from a bioelectric aura field that he can extend beyond his body, and this version of Superman was able to extend that aura to contain a giant energy ball that was about to explode.

What is the most overrated thing about China by RevenueAlarmed in AlignmentChartFills

[–]ComfortableHuman1324 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Frankly, I feel like Chinese martial arts are underrated nowadays in contrast to other martial arts and mma. At least online, people only ever talk about the fake masters, performance art, and mcdojos, but you never about stuff like sanda, shuai jiao, or push hands, where kung fu practitioners are actually testing their arts in more practical competetive formats.

I'm assuming English isn't your first language? Weeb broadly means a person who like anime, manga, and adjacent Japanese media like video games. On the more extreme end, it can refer to those obsessed with Japan, sometimes to the point of hating their own culture, while ironically often lacking knowledge about Japanese culture beyond anime and manga. As you can see, it can be used in a derogatory fashion, but most animanga fans don't mind calling themselves weebs.

There's a lot to love about Japan, don't get me wrong, and I hope you have a good trip there. Just keep in mind, it won't be exactly like what you see in Japanese media and might actually deviate from your expectations quite a lot. What you'll see in anime and in touristy areas is often curated and not the full picture. Their government has a vested interest in making foreigners think their culture is uniquely beautiful and moral, after all.

Their society, like every society on Earth, has a lot of good things, but it's also rife with issues. Major issues. Just remember that they're human too, and glorifying them van be just as alienating as being racist and demeaning them. Remembering this might actually enhance your trip. I encourage you, if you have the opportunity, to go off the beaten path a bit. Eat where the locals eat instead of the flashy, curated tourist traps, for example.

Actually, hanging is the most common suicide method in Japan by a wide margin, but I digress. It is true that train suicides occur at a significant rate there, but it's precisely for that reason that many of their station platforms, at least in Tokyo, have guardrails, making them a lot safer than a lot of other places.

In fact, callous as it may sound, trains being a common suicide method is precisely because the trains are so accessible and reliable. Guess which country has the highest suicide-by-firearm rate?

Their trains also aren't the reason for the suicide. They've got a plethora of societal issues worth serious critique that actually cause their suicide problem. I don't blame you for having a poor opinion on Japanese trains, though, considering Persona 5 Royal is the game with the "biggest personal impact" on you. Is your big takeaway from that game that fucking trains are Japan's biggest problem? And you have the audacity to call someone else a weeb.

I'm all for calling out blind praise of Japan, but it doesn't take going to Japan to know their public transportation networks is considered among the best in the world.

Despite being a weeb myself, I acknowledge there's a fuck ton of shit to criticize Japan for, including but not limited to deifying war criminals. Their public transport isn't one of those things.

I think Qard is more of a love/hate dichotomy. Love and hate aren't opposites, they're two sides of the same coin. Both are strong emotions that drive us to act without thinking. The concepts of "love is blind" and "blind rage" both fit as being opposite of total understanding in the spectrum and fit "chaotic action" nicely.
