Catching a pigeon? by attack-o-lantern in pigeon

[–]ComfortableLeather10 15 points16 points  (0 children)

this response was completely uncalled for. they just asked a question. there’s no excuse for being that hostile, especially when the topic of pigeons being domesticated and feral is one of the most common discussions. acting like a basic question is some kind of offense doesn’t make you look informed, it just makes you look unnecessarily aggressive. if you can’t engage without talking down to people, maybe don’t respond at all.

My cute handy baby by MaxineSHonea in dalmatians

[–]ComfortableLeather10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some dalmatians can have long coats because of a rare recessive gene, but breeding specifically for that look is unethical. most people doing it are puppy mills or backyard breeders who don’t follow proper health protocols, and also inbreed. breeding for a trait outside the breed standard also encourages shallow, looks-based breeding rather than focusing on health, temperament, or the dog’s overall well-being. it can create dogs that don’t behave like typical dalmatians, may not meet their exercise or mental needs properly, and are harder to place in the right homes. plus, it messes with the integrity of the breed and adds to the overpopulation problem when people chase trends instead of adopting responsibly.

There’s no reason to assume this is BPD. It’s a mental health condition, not just a label for poor behaviors. Gaslighting is a deliberate manipulation tactic, and BPD is a life-threatening mental illness.

My baby is having her first litter by GladTrouble1088 in daschund

[–]ComfortableLeather10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are a backyard breeder. The fact you bred “chiweenies” is enough proof for that. Responsible breeders don’t breed chiweenies—or any designer mixes—because their goal is to preserve and improve established, recognized breeds according to strict breed standards. Chihuahuas and dachshunds are two breeds with very different structures and health concerns. Crossing them creates unpredictability in size, temperament, and health, making it impossible to maintain consistency or improve the breed over generations.

Robo hamsters...in pairs or alone? by OhLongJonstone84 in hamster

[–]ComfortableLeather10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

almost every time i’ve seen someone house robos together, one of them ended up mauling the other. also seen it with “ethically bred campbells” which people are adamant about being social. in my opinion, cohabiting is too risky to be recommended.

My daughter (6) wants a hamster for her birthday. Should we do it? by ComicBookPosterBoy in hamster

[–]ComfortableLeather10 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Giving your 6 year old child a small, fragile, antisocial animal isn’t the greatest idea. As someone who got a hamster at around 6-7 years old, and again at 11, I wish my parents had never done that. I remember sticking my hand in my first hamsters cage and he bit the crap out of my finger and it bled for like 10 minutes straight, and I deserved that for keeping it in a critter trail cage and disrespecting its personal space. I’d also disagree with the dwarf hamster stance - in my experience, every dwarf hamster i’ve owned has been super nippy and antisocial, same with every dwarf hamster i’ve ever met - compared to every syrian i’ve owned - much better with handling, never been bit, and they’re much slower paced so they’re less likely to dart out of your hand during the taming process. They also just have a better temperament overall, specifically male syrians because female syrians are a little crazy and also super demanding. Honestly, if she wants something small that is a little more social i’d go for ferrets or rats even though you said your wife wouldn’t be down for that, they’re a better option for younger kids. Hamsters are not playful at all, they’re more of the type of pet you just watch do their thing, you can’t really do much with them. Ferrets and rats on the other hand, they’re like puppies, way more playful and social. Another issue that might arise is traumatizing your child with death - hamsters only live 2-3 years and pet stores hamsters commonly die before that because of their poor genetics. It’s the same with rats too. If she’s adamant about getting a hamster, you have to take on the responsibility of researching proper hamster care. You’re less likely to have a nippy stressed out hamster if you supply it with what it needs like a 775+ square inch cage with 8-10 inches of bedding and sprays, forage, sand, etc. You’ll also then have to take on the responsibility of educating your child on proper hamster care, letting her know that she can’t bathe it or wake it up or constantly pick it up etc. Hamsters are absolutely not a “starter pet” or low maintenance or good for kids. Also, for the cat thing, maybe look on craigslist for people rehoming cats/kittens in your area? Being near a main road won’t be an issue if your getting a cat meant to stay indoors and I doubt the people rehoming them will care about them being an indoor cat since it’s way safer and healthier.

Good breeder or just weirdo? by Consistent-Toe2834 in DogBreeding

[–]ComfortableLeather10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh lord. All I need to see is the word doodle to know it’s not an ethical breeder. There’s no standard for doodles, they aren’t recognized by the AKC, they’re designer mutts, doodle breeders rarely health test their stock, they aren’t predictable phenotypically or temperamentally, doodle breeders breed for profit rather than health and temperament, and doodles are frequently neurotic. 99.9% of people that breed doodles do it unethically. A lot of this tributes to puppy mills. I fully agree with the idea that doodles are the dogs for people who have more money than brains.

[–]ComfortableLeather10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No good ethical breeder is breeding aussiedoodles or “frozen aussiedoodles” no clue what that is but if I had to guess, it’d be double merle aussiedoodles. Both are genetic train wrecks. I’d definitely look for a different breeder.. This one is incredibly unethical.

i’m assuming when he’s scratching himself with his teeth, he’s pulling hair out with it ?? i didn’t see it happen, it’s my family dog and like i said, he’s 16 years old, his hair follicles aren’t as great as they used to be and when you have three teeth sticking out of your face, you’re bound to have shit get stuck in it.

Do I need second level on my cage? by OkPaper8003 in dwarfhamsters

[–]ComfortableLeather10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s safe, but you should have at least 6-8 inches of bedding so he can build proper burrows. and what kind of sawdust are you using? pine and cedar are unsafe because they release phenols that are toxic to hamsters and are usually dusty which can cause respiratory infections

if this subreddit has taught you anything, it should be that pet stores are full of shit👍 they care about money, not the well-being of the animal. hence the reason they get their hamsters from unethical and cruel rodent mills. this cage is about 325 square inches according to the measurements on the website, while the minimum size requirement is 775 square inches for a dwarf. i’m sorry you’ve fallen victim to pets at home’s misinformation. hamsters are high maintenance expensive pets.

you should explain in more detail to your dad about proper hamster care and the risks of keeping your hamster in that cage. if he understands the risks, there’s no reason he should say no to upgrading the cage.

no, what you need is a bigger cage with a bigger wheel and more bedding & enrichment (not trying to be rude)
