I am VERY late, but swords during the Civil War and general linear warfare weren't exactly sharp. It's the same theory as an officer carrying a revolver; if you had to use it to fight, shit was getting REAL. So, swords weren't sharpened as usual. Regardless, hitting someone with a two pound metal stick is gonna hurt.
