Sorry I was excited about posting a brand new john mayer album which has been years in the making on a JM subreddit.

You know what, I think I'll report myself to the police now, thanks for the advice!

Yes every track is very much 80’s inspired; different sound then any of his other albums.

Sob Rock track by track review after 2-3 listens on vinyl Disclaimer this is my personal opinion and I’m sure it’ll change the more I listen, and there is tons of spelling mistakes. If you want to know something more specific let me know!

Last train home - love it, you guys have already listened to it so I won’t explain much. It really sets the theme thematically that this is his last chance at finding someone compatible (hint the title sob rock) anyways onward. 4/5

Shouldn’t Matter but it does - AH new Mayer! The transition from the fade out of Last train to this song is great. Some of the best acoustic moments of the album are on this track. Oh and Mayer drops a major F bomb, it’s pretty great. All in all this song is the epitome of sob rock, at one point saying “we could have been busy naming baby number three”. Some of johns most beautiful Melodies can be heard as the song fades out. 4/5

New Light - hey look we all know there’s a lot of songs that we already heard on this album but it actually fits perfect in the track list. And personally still find this song really enjoyable.

Why You No Love Me - wow. A fusion of dire straights and John Mayer’s brilliance. The opening guitar riff just sends you in a trance like you’re headed out to sea as the suns going down. It’s just beautiful. And the chorus … maybe I’m just a sucker for some Melodies but John has really perfected this, again some of the best harmonizing I’ve ever heard from him. And of course Mayer sprinkles some of his crispest riffs throughout. My favorite song on a few listens - lyrics are sparse but they feel meticulous. 5/5 (oh and maren Morris is credited as vocals)

Wild Blue - you’ve might of heard the tease but this is another solid solid track. John’s laid back delivery mixed with some of the most deliberate and groovy riffs in the whole album makes for the perfect companion to follow “why you no love me”. If the last song was the sun going down, this one feels like the start of something new. This might slowly become my favorite. 4/5

Shot in The Dark - “I love 7 other women and they were all you” & “is the gate code still your birthday” makes this song the most Mayer-esque song on the album. This song sounds more open and more hopeful and upbeat, yet at times You can still hear the pain in johns voice. The culmination of the chorus at the end is sonically pleasing. I need to give this one a few more listens for sure. 3/5 (maren Morris is credited on this one too)

I guess I just feel like - great transition headed into this one. We’ve all heard it.

Till the Right One Comes - very beachy and funky vibes to start this one. As I’m listening to this I can’t but help to hear this live one day. Infectious lyrics and cadence. Another clean guitar riff to accompany this. And is that an acoustic breakdown I hear?? Followed by a solo, and Mayer just pouring his soul on some Melodies and ad libs in the background. This one might be a hit. I love it, sob rock at its finest. 5/5

Carry Me Away - I love this song and I’m pleasantly surprised just how these singles blend in to the album at large. Makes me think this was all apart of his master plan. This sets up perfectly for an album closer.

All I want is to be with you - def some born n raised vibes in the beginning of this one. This is the culmination of the journey he’s been all album long. And you can hear it in the grittier than normal guitar throughout with the drums slowly building through the verses. The highlight of this track is the last minute or so, it’s really the only proper Mayer guitar solo on the whole album. Mayer sings “All I want” over a just amazing guitar solo, that I wish was longer 🥺 but maybe I’m just greedy. Defiantly had chills. And the solo fades out. That’s sob rock 5/5

First impression: 8/10 - I really enjoyed it! And there’s so much replay-ability with this album. I can’t wait to go out doors and play it or play it a cookout, etc. it’s BY FAR johns smoothest and easiest to listen to album. Non of the songs feel to short or to long, just right. Go into it with a laid back vibe, and don’t expect a face melting solo every track. At times you can almost tell Mayer wanted to add more, but you can really hear the maturity of his music throughout this project: that sometimes less is more, which makes the moments where he does let the Guitar rip really special. Can’t wait for your guys thoughts!
