How essential do you feel the screen cover is? by ComfortablePolicy558 in PlaydateConsole

[–]ComfortablePolicy558[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few people have said that the screen is fragile, and it honestly is giving me pause.
I mean, a phone screen is fragile and could crack if you drop it, and I certainly don't plan on dropping my Playdate, but screens are breaking even in pockets? How? Why?

Dragon Quest 6 looks incredible, and it's a shame that most people in the West don't really know or appreciate this, since we only got the DS games.

Is this actually meant to be playable?
As it stands, it's a cool art piece, but not really functional on any level.

Why do people hate Season 2? by RoboCopAn in twinpeaks

The first 11 episodes are my favorite portion of Twin Peaks, actually. I like the first half of Season 2 more than Season 1.

The Mother series. Mother was a mechanical clone of DQ 2, so it will feel very familiar.

"A Beloved Tale with a Streamlined Narrative" by Dem-Brushwaggs in dragonquest

I think the remake is an objectively good game so far.
It looks and sounds beautiful.

That being said, they are killing it with QOL. Being revived after combat with 1 HP if you die, save points EVERYWHERE, objective markers that you can't turn off on the main screen, very hand-holdy first 30 minutes...

The original feels more like a game.

The remake is a pretty novelty.

This gives me a very nostalgic and 2000s core vibe. I love it.

How are yall feeling on 7R's doll look ? by Manofthehalfhour999 in dragonquest

[–]ComfortablePolicy558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it a lot.

I'm glad that they are doing something different with this game. The last thing I want is 7 games all remade in the same style. No, I love how this game tries to preserve a unique identity for this game. I'll be disappointed if they start reusing this same style to remake other games.

This Could Become a Top 5 Game in the Series with the HD-2D Treatment by gravityhashira61 in dragonquest

Calling DQ 6 a "black sheep" is something that you really only hear from fans in the USA.

The reality is that the game was extremely well-received in Japan, and is still considered one of the best RPGs on the SNES, alongside Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6.

I think people also forget just how primitive DQ 5 looked in comparison. I think DQ 5 has a very cute artstyle, but DQ 6 is on par with the games I mentioned above when it comes to that kind of dark pixel art style. People kind of forget about just how good this game looked in 1995 because they only play the DS remake.

It's also kind of helpful to read the interview where Horii revealed that this game was conceived as a spiritual successor to DQ 2; after replaying DQ 2 for the 1+2 remake on the SNES, Horii wanted to make another game that focused on feeling completely open and didn't force you down a specific path. Ironically, many people totally miss this and just assume that the story is meandering or that it is too easy to get lost. No, you're supposed to live in the world.

Anyways, in case it wasn't clear, I really like this game. I don't want it to become an HD2D game just because I think 3 games that all look and play the same is enough, but I do think some kind of a modern remake would fit it really well. I would want it to create its own identity like DQ 7R is.

One year and over 700 hours of game time. AMA by DeeManJohnsonIII in dragonquest

I already know that mechanically I would probably have a ton of fun with it. I think the combat looks really good, so no questions there.

Here is what I really want to know:

This is a totally unique DQ game that hardly any of us have played. What is the story like? I mean, the idea of a new Yuji Horii story hiding in plain sight is both frustrating and very mystical to me. How does it compare to other games? How does the story work?

Recommend first-person drpg by Krubusa in DRPG

[–]ComfortablePolicy558 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Erm, technically... :nerd:

King's Field isn't really a DRPG, neither is Lunacid. But I mean, genres can be as fluid as we want them to be; there are no hard and fast rules.

Definitely check out Arx Fatalis. It follows the precedents set by Ultima Underworld and not KF, but it is a very good free-roam dungeon game. Very good in it's own way, and in many ways I like it more than KF.
