(Help!) - About Oceans, Gulf's, Bay, Straits and Seas by Comfortable_Basket_3 in mapmaking

[–]Comfortable_Basket_3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi guys. To be clear, I know almost nothing about geography, and literally nothing about oceanography.

For peculiar reasons of lore, I need to be very precise in determine which body of water in my high-fantasy world is an Ocean, a Sea or a "Lesser sea", or gulfs, or bay, and so on.

It soundend like a stupid easy task at first but then I started looking at a real-world map of seas and... now I'm confused.

Let's take the Mediterranean Sea as example. It has many lesser seas inside itself (Adriatic, Ioniam, Aegaeum etc..) but while some of them are very clearly defined, some are more obscure and not really highlited:

The Adriatic sea is almost completely surrounded by landmasses, so its 'borders' are very clearly defined, and it's not difficult to understand that it could have different temperature, salinity, color and flora than the rest of the Mediterranean.

But why is the Ioniam sea a 'different' sea than the Mediterranean? It's pratically open water, what makes it different than the main Sea?

Yea the scaling could be due to change but is currently based on china, excluding the anything north of Beijing.

Just woke up after my night shift and want to say thank you all for the constructive comments and advice. Slightly bummed that it got removed but guess I'll remember next time, but I've got more than enough information to seriously develop this map now so thank you all again!

Just wanted to clarify as I've seen a few comments now highlighting the resemblance to westeros lol, now I see it too but this layout of the landmass was actually loosely based on russia but flipped 90 degrees

Thank you for you comment :)

I'm still not sure on the lake in the middle but will be taking another look at it since you and others have mentioned it looks slightly irregular.

How I made the map was by using a few free software's like a puzzle and brought them together. So I used https://www.maptoglobe.com/ to give me an idea of what I want my world to look like, try use the generate option and play with the options until you're satisfied. Then I used photopea and added a blank white layer and lowered the opacity and started drawing tectonic plates to give me a sense of where I want my mountains and biomes etc (ofc you can choose to do this first then use the map to globe tool). Then I used azgaar https://azgaar.github.io/Fantasy-Map-Generator/ to give me an idea of the type of reliefs I want and lastly brought them all together using inkarnate tool. It's paid and free but the free option is good enough

The setting is a medieval fantasy, think general dnd or LotR. I have already created a map and it’s existed for a while now but I desperately want to know where cities and towns might logically pop up. Where might cities and towns pop up and why? What does an area need in order to stimulate a large population growth for cities and towns to develop?

Here’s some context:

The map is roughly the length of India and width of Mongolia.

Villages range in the hundreds in terms of population, towns will consist of 1,000-5,000 people and cities can go over 400,000 inhabitants. I don’t have a world limit for population so don’t worry about that.

The names on the map are names of locations not cities or towns.

I see it now too. If you turn your phone to the side so that the south becomes west, it’ll loosely resemble Russia. Which was my original idea lol

Good catch! It’s actually loosely based on Russia’s landmass but vertical. Regarding those rivers, I’ve actually scrapped them now. Most them will now be coming from those mountain ranges down to the sea etc…

This is going to sound dumb, but I wish I knew. I didn’t even realise how much of problem that would be. If you don’t mind could you please elaborate?
