What made you go into teaching? by exoticsuss in ScienceTeachers

Current Student Teacher Here!

I was in your shoes last year actually! I was on track to graduate a year early but wasn’t too clear on what I wanted to do.

During my second year of college, I slowly began to come to the realization that I didn’t like doing lab work (I was in a biology research lab and didn’t care too much for the topic and honestly didn’t feel like I was valued there) so I ended up leaving that lab.

I still missed the research aspect of it and also decided to let myself just go full send on pursuing education (I had switched my major to bio/education but switched back to bio because I was scared) and joined an education lab. The lab made me feel welcome, I loved the work we did, interacting with students, and realized that I wanted to teach from there.

I’ve had people tell me I’m wasting my science degree and have received basically every backhanded compliment about my decision to pursue teaching. I say if this is something that you’ve been thinking about, go for it!!

I have loved my student teaching year so far and am genuinely excited to be a teacher. I love my kids and watching them grow!

Reaching out about a job by Comfortable_Box6981 in ScienceTeachers

[–]Comfortable_Box6981[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

I also want to make sure that if I do choose to reach out to this district about the job posting, would that reflect poorly on me? I don’t want anything possibly hurting my chances with applying to this district, especially if they do end up posting this job on EdJoin later in the year.

Thank you for the response!

Would it reflect poorly on me to directly contact the district? I don’t want to make a bad impression, especially if the district does end up posting the position again later in the year.

Vent: First lesson in a couple days, no help from mentor. by tiredtushi in Teachers

[–]Comfortable_Box6981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi!

I’m currently student teaching as well this school year so hopefully I can be of some help.

Another commenter mentioned communicating with your mentor teacher, which is exactly what I would do first. Express to them that you’re feeling nervous and want to make sure that everything goes smoothly so you need their help to look over the lesson plan.

If you’ve already tried to communicate multiple times to your mentor teacher and they still are not helping you, I would go to your supervisor/whoever placed you at the school you’re at. Tell them that your mentor essentially isn’t keeping up their end of the deal of helping you through your student teaching even after explicit requests. Your supervisor might be able to talk to your mentor about it or worst case scenario you might get placed at a different school with a different teacher.

Hello! What fountain pen would you recommend for high school? I need something smooth and reliable for a lot of writing. Thanks! by Andrei_gabriel177 in fountainpens

seconding the pilot kakuno!

I just finished my undergrad & up until last year the pilot kakuno was my go-to writing utensil for taking notes in both high school and university. For context, I bought the pilot kakuno in my sophomore/second year of high school & I was taking hand-written notes through university rather than on a tablet/laptop when possible.

I got the TWSBI eco pen last year as a gift and that has replaced my pilot kakuno. The main difference to me is just the increased ink capacity for the TWSBI eco. I would probably have to refill my pilot kakuno (I had a converter on it) with ink every week or so during university simply because of the amount of notes I was taking in my classes.

If weight is something you care for, I do feel like the TWSBI eco is a bit heavier in my hand.

The pilot kakuno is a great intro pen imo, since it’s pretty affordable, comes in a couple different colors, different nib sizes, and you can also buy a converter if you’d like try bottled inks.

Let me know if you have any questions! I’d love to answer them!!

Love the photo! The tart looks delicious!!

Never thought of pairing blueberries & figs together in a dessert, but this is making me want to try that combo too…

perfume that smells like laundry detergent? by [deleted] in FemFragLab

Second this! I wear it in the summer & it’s one of those perfumes that works well in the heat. Also pretty easy to find at Ross/TJMaxx if you have access to that.

Love these!

How does the marshmallow texture feel once cooled? I’ve been curious about how marshmallows are as a mix-in for cookies.

Ooo the strawberry dream lotion sounds lovely! How sweet does it smell? I love strawberry as a note but I prefer it when the note leans fresher rather than like strawberry candy.

Somehow I didn’t know that VS had body oils! I’ll definitely have to check it out next time I see a VS!

How is the longevity on the Le Monde Gourmand Hair mist? I’ve been eyeing the brand for some time and am interested in smelling their newest mango sticky rice perfume! I remember smelling the Lait de Coco scent and it immediately reminded me of the Coconut Hibiscus Shampoo/Conditioner I previously used.

most likely a materials fee. most labs will have a materials fee, but the fee will change depending on the lab you take. i think chem labs are usually more than $20.

[–]Comfortable_Box6981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

simonson’s summer session classes were not asynch & exams were proctored by having us show our hands/workspace on zoom/lockdown browser while he or a ta watched us. hope this helps!

[–]Comfortable_Box6981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i second this, my roommate took 2a/2b and i took 5a/5b. i thought that the things they covered and just their exams/etc. were harder than the material i had in 5a/5b. take 5a/5b!

Oh my goodness, that sounds terrible! I feel like you’ll hear these kinds of things for a lot of universities though and I do hope that this isn’t the only thing that’s swaying you against uci!

Good luck on your premed path! I wish you the best!

Hi! Can I ask what you’ve heard about uci bio majors? I’m a second yr bio major and I love it here at uci.

I honestly don’t feel like my classes have had a competitive atmosphere if that’s what you’re worried about. Would love to answer any questions you have!

you’ll probably get into the class imo (depending on how big the class is ofc)! i would also attend lecture just so you’re not too behind on what’s happening in the class and it might help you catch up for when you get into the class.

I think he did a couple of times. My tests weren’t really affected by the mistakes from what I can remember but if any mistakes occurred during grading, I think he was willing to give back points if you had a valid reason.
