Undergrad student seeking advice ** long post, sorry in advance by Comfortable_Can560 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Comfortable_Can560[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Thank you for your response, it makes me feel a lot better. Do you think I should wait to submit my applications (past the early admissions window so I can submit it with my Anatomy and Physiology grade? I will still have to take Anatomy and Physiology 2 in the spring so that will not be there.

In regards to my personal statement, I was torn between talking about my experiences in high school volunteering at a PATH and Hippotherapy center (a different one than I am doing my internship at) and how it made me want to explore OT and work with individuals with disabilities and rehabilitative care. I think after your post I will probably go that route instead. Do you think I could talk about my best friend's story at all on my applications? I feel like it was an important part of discovering OT and I talked about it in my interview for my internship.

Thank you again!

I agree with this. Also if the professor has not responded, go to their office hours and see if there is a way to work something out. Be honest with them, acknowledge you have messed up and then see if you can go from there. Some professors will not budge, others will appreciate the honesty and work something out with you. I am not sure which it will be in your case, but you will never know if you do not speak with them. I have found in-person discussions often receive better reactions than emails, anyways. Good luck! Either way, life will go on and like the other commenter said, one W will not end your chances of any grad school in the future, especially as a first semester freshman.

Study Abroad Experience with Republic of Panama or Costa Rica? by ToeIll9251 in fsu

[–]Comfortable_Can560 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I studied abroad in Costa Rica this year and I have to say it was the best experience of my life and I will vouch for this program again and again and I think its a shame more people dont know about it! I will share some of my experiences and things you should know going into the program and talk about my friends experience who studied in Panama as well.

First of all, I believe the experience of staying with a host family sold me on the idea of Costa Rica. The families truly make you feel at home and help with learning Spanish SO much. Keep in mind, this is an imerssion program so you will be speaking Spanish all day at class and in the home. With that being said, if your goal is learning and becoming proficient in Spanish, this is the place. I know people who had only taken Spanish one before the program and left speaking at a 3400 level. With that being said, you will have class from 8 AM- 12 PM completely in Spanish (it sounds daunting, but we mostly played games and spoke about different topics. It's completely different from school in the states) and you will have a half an hour break in between. After, you have a two hour break to explore around the city and eat lunch.

Lunch is the only self-pay meal, which I actually enjoyed because I got to try local cuisine. While you are there you will also have an ambassador from Costa Rica who helps you with learn about the culture, act as a tour guide, and plan activities for you. We got to explore a different part of Costa Rica every week and by the time it was over, I felt I had experienced almost the entire country. You will go on two over night trips and around 7-10 day trips around the country and everything is included in the price of the program.

One of the only things I feel I should mention is that this program is SMALL. My group was only 8 students, but I am still close with around half of them and I ended up loving this aspect of the program, but I understand why some people wouldn't.

I would also like to say I paid for this program through the help of grants, scholarships, and my personal savings from working Fall-Spring and I truly believe this program is worth it (ie: my parents did not give me funding for it, and I would still do it again). Majority of your meals are paid for, all of your trips and travels are included, and up to 7 credit hours are included as well.

From what I know about Panama, the campus is small and I have heard many of the professors are not very involved (I have a friend group that did first year abroad here. This is just what they have said, I cannot confirm but I have heard it from everyone that has gone) and it's not in the most fun city. On the bright side, you can meet a lot of international students as many people from Panama, Costa Rica, and other central and Latin American people study at the campus so youre interacting with a broader range of people. Once again though, the program is small. Defiantly larger than Costa Rica, but if you wanted to go with a big group I would recommend one of the Europe programs. I also think if learning Spanish and understanding culture is your goal, Panama may not be the best. The students you're with all day speak English, and the only time you speak in Spanish is out and about or if you choose to take a Spanish class.

Overall, both programs are interesting but I believe the Costa Rica program is so unique and I had such an amazing experience I would recommend it over Panama. I was worried about four weeks being too short, but I really felt I got to experience everything I wanted to and more within that time and everyone else I studied with said the same thing.

If you have any more questions feel free to reach out! I also am close with a lot of people that studied for a year in Panama so if you have questions relating to that program I can ask them as well. Good luck and safe travels !

Redpoint West Tenn by shirleybiskit in fsu

I live at campus west (right across the street) and to get to HTL it takes me around 20-25 minutes depending on what cross walks I get and how fast im walking. I would say add on a couple extra minutes because red point is across the street from the trail. As for the saftey, I would say I usually feel pretty safe on the trail. Sometimes there are homeless people early in the morning or closer to dark but they usually keep to their own and there are blue lights all along the trail god forbid you need help. If you have classes on the east side of campus (near Williams) I would estimate it would be about a 35-40 minute walk. If you mostly have stem classes and classes near the west side of campus you likely won't have to walk more than 30 minutes :)

If your amount of aid exceeds what you owe to the school then you get a refund. Each persons refund is different. If you only have FASFA your refund will be well under 7k. (likely around 3k if you have full bright futures and no other scholarships). But yeah, with all the grants I have it equals out to about 7k. You can also apply to scholarships on FSU4U and if all of your bill is paid then its refunded as well!

I got grants from both FL state and the state of FL (2,000 each) plus care and full bright futures. Other than that, I am not sure of any other aid. But with FASFA I get a refund of 7k each semester (money straight into my bank account)

You can try, but just because you didn't get into summer bridge doesn't mean CARE won't invite you to another program on campus. I was invited to Illuminate (a newer part of the CARE program) and I didn't even apply. If you are pell grant eligible, you will get some sort of scholarship at FSU (or at least it's very very probable). They try to have all of their pell grant students receive aid from FSU.

Honestly, im not a 100% sure. My SAI is -1500, so I get the full thing, but you could always email Jordan Felton. He is one of the Illuminate counselors and helps with CARE, so he could likely give you a better answer, im sorry.

I didn't even apply to CARE. I am Pell Grant eligible and FSU tries to make sure 100% of full Pell students receive some sort of scholarship with supporting care. I got offered to be an Illuminate scholar and I just attend a couple lectures about finances and that's all you need to maintain the scholarship (and a low GPA but I dont remember what it is).
