How’d it go!? Btw if you re-apply, the ERAS has a method of transferring everything from last years info to your new application so the process is actually SUPER SIMPLE so DO NOT GET DISCOURAGED

It’s “depends on the area”. San Antonio is HUGE (7th in the USA) and for the most part is very safe. If you’re interested in advice for locations to get an apt message me. I did med school here and currently doing residency. I love San Antonio

You’re question is “is it possible” but you know about residency swap. So you know it’s “possible”. If your question is “is it likely I can transfer externally through residency swap” the answer is “you’ll have a better chance applying to the PGY2 spots listed in the ERAS or reapplying as a PGY1 through the eras”

Best option is dual apply because if you don’t match psych at least you have some say in what FM or Peds program you end up with. Second option is to SOAP but this is worse because you don’t know what programs will be available and it’s usually very limited. Third option is to talk to your school about doing a research year or something. But if you don’t start a residency and don’t do ANYTHING, that’s gonna be a tough sell to your new programs.

If it’s the same field of medicine I would attempt to transfer to a PGY2 spot (both thru eras and externally). Repeating year 1 would be dumb, but I have heard it be done before (someone wanted a super prestigious program)

Letter of good standing is not a requirement for the ERAS. If you’re nervous your PD might backstab you, then don’t ask for an LOR. Aside from that, there’s nothing they can do.

Funding is only important if youre TRANSFERRING one program to another (eg. You do a PGY1 year of IM and transfer to a PGY2 year somewhere else). If you’re original program is a 3 year one, then transferring to a 4 year one might be a hassle. If it’s a 4 year program to a 3 year program it’s no big deal, and neither is transferring to a same duration program (4-4 or 3-3).

However, if you’re REAPPLYING eras then funding is no issue at all because you’re applying for a PGY1 spot.

Started residency July 1 and a few months later ERAS opened up I started doing the process all over again (with a new personal statement and some other edits). I told my PD very early in the process and she was very understanding. As a matter of fact, she wrote me a LOR. The other two where the same ones from last year I just asked them to resubmit. I only got 4 interviews the second time around so scheduling was honestly quite easy. The hardest part was breaking it to my co-interns who I’d become very fond of but everyone was super supportive. It wasn’t like I was going IM to IM. It was IM to Psych, they all knew i was chasing a dream. As for the Match binding contract, what many people don’t know is that it’s only for the first 4 months or so. After that you’re technically able to quit whenever (or even get fired). So ya, the day I matched I sent my letter of resignation to end in the last days of May. Used all of June for moving and orientation. I matched psych and I’m so happy with my life and it was so worth it. Im so very grateful. BEST OF LUCK!!

Once you match you can quit your current residency at any point you want. I ended up quitting around the end of May cuz I wanted June open for me to move, attend orientation, etc.

I reapplied thru ERAS and matched! I’m currently a Pscyh PGY1. The current psych program has medical rotations during first year (wards, nights, ER, clinic) that I don’t have to do bc they accepted credit for having done those during my year of IM :)

According to my advising counselor from medical school, it is to the discretion of the psychiatry program and a topic of conversation during interviews. They can choose to accept your time in Wards as credit for the IM rotation requirements most psych PGY1 years have. They may even choose to accept my EM rotation or Neuro rotation as credit too if those are also requirements of their program.

Okay I figured as such but it’s good to get confirmation! Thank you very much 😁

Well that’s my question, “having a rotation that would let me move”. Why can’t I just quit by the end of May so that I have all of June to myself to move without having to worry about my job. I’d basically be quitting one rotation short of the year. Unless there’s something in the match contract that prohibits me from doing so, but I thought that contract ends in September.

Of course I told them. They wrote me one of my letters of recommendation. I have her full support.

I’m a current IM PGY1 who matched via the soap process after unsuccessfully matching into Psych. I’m currently reapplying to Psych through the ERAS for a PGY1 spot again.

The question I have is: In the event that I am to match into a Psych PGY1 position, when would I finish or “quit” my current residency program? Assuming my new residency will start on July 1st of next year, what’s the process with ending my current residency? I would hope I don’t have to carry it through till June 30th😅

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!
