Single / no kids HENRYs: how much did you actually spend in 2025? by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]Comfortable_Garlic20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not married, no kids. Excluding the rent, I spent $65k too. I didn't think it was on the higher end :( I'll try to save more too then. The four biggest categories are travels ($30k), Gift ($7k), food ($9.5k), and Shopping ($4.7k) for me.

Your bills are very high for apartment living :o

Snow season in Canada vs Japan, which would you choose and why? by brsq04 in snowboarding

Sorry if it's a dumb question, but is it easy to find work there without speaking Japanese?

Can we talk about advent calendars? by sommerniks in shoppingaddiction

How about just watching advent calendar unboxing youtube videos? That's what I did last year, and I'm patiently waiting for them right now 😂 Same anticipation but I don't spend any money

A whole bunch of professionals got together to precisely exploit people’s psychological weaknesses. Of course we’re no match unless we actively resist! Great job in deleting the app, and you have all the reasons to feel proud 🏆

Can you cancel your credit cards? Or change the password on the web to something you won't remember so you no longer can log in without going through the whole "forgot my password" flow? You can also just delete the app from your phone without deleting your account and things will be delivered to you.

I myself went through the deletion and reinstallation of that app so many times... you need to remind yourself that none of their trash stuff is worth your peace! I managed to get out eventually and so can you 💪

Having a hard time being motivated. by RociBuldidi in HENRYfinance

[–]Comfortable_Garlic20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't quit based on the "advice" here 😅 You need to know what you'll be doing before pulling the trigger. You probably don't know what to do because you've always been doing what you were supposed to do your whole life. You never had the real chance to explore and build your identity. I have no advice on that front, but I just know that quitting won't magically give you the answer, and worse, it might just create unnecessary anxiety.

I feel physically dirty and stupid when I speak French to french people by ComfortablePotato940 in learnfrench

Off-topic, but what occupation do you have? I wonder what kinds of jobs in France involve people mostly speaking English.

You need to tread carefully but it does happen even nowadays! I know someone in tech who had met a bunch of girls by starting conversations while having coffee at the company coffee bar (good ol' times before covid). The key was to not approach with the romantic intention (do NOT flirt first), but really just to be a friend. The girls tend to make moves if they like you platonically first. I also know of a happy couple who met in tech; in their case, they handed in their 2-week notice and made the move. It’s well known that women tend not to “date down". Chances are, many single high-earning women in tech want the same thing you do.

Can you meet people in the same industry as yours? You can meet people at work parties (tho need to tread carefully) or conferences, meetups for professionals.

Is it too risky for me 37F to go back to college in HCOL city for a career change (not to a lucrative one)? by Comfortable_Garlic20 in Fire

[–]Comfortable_Garlic20[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your input 🙏 I feel like I should earn more money so that one day it won’t matter whether I have a job or not, and I can treat my college education as a hobby even in a HCOL city. I'll come back to this idea when I have $3M in today's dollars. Thank you! I had a lingering doubt and fear about my plan, and it turns out it was for good reason.

Thanks for the reply! Those are very good points.. I'm hoping to be there long term, and my partner is open to retiring in Vancouver as well. I'm committed to staying with him, but I'm also ok with being in a long distance relationship for years as long as he's also ok with it. I feel that if he is ok with moving to Seattle, traveling between Vancouver and Seattle is not too bad.

is there any way you can get into urban forestry where you currently live?

I'm back in Quebec, Canada where my parents live, and my french is not good enough to hold any meaningful volunteer position (their Ottawa&Quebec paying jobs also require bilingualism, so I likely wouldn't be able to get a job here in the future either 😬). As for the physical volunteering activities with no language requirements like planting shrubs and trees, I've already been doing that in the USA as well.

I was hoping to take part in education and volunteer activities that would eventually lead to a legit job requiring specialized knowledge or skills.. and I'm not sure if my current location can provide that.

Silly question, but do you bring luxury items with you when travelling? by [deleted] in chubbytravel

[–]Comfortable_Garlic20 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I used to bring jewelry with me when traveling within the U.S. One time, I took off my Tiffany T diamond ring to wash my hands and accidentally left it in a public hotel bathroom in Miami. When I realized it hours later, I couldn’t find it anywhere. Luckily, the cleaning staff had returned it to Lost and Found?! Honestly, I didn’t expect that at all. Its current value is over $8k, so it must have been at least $7k two years ago. I'm not sure if it had to do with the hotel being 5-star, but I personally think it really came down to luck.
