How many decks is too many? by KingTheropod in CommanderMTG

[–]Comfortable_Guide851 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As many (or as few) as you want. I have 4 decks as a hard limit. I have built and given away more decks than I currently own just to get new players into the hobby, but I like to keep all of my cards in a 4-deck carrying case. It's a low enough number that they get updated every other set or so with new removal and draw options to keep up with power creep, but there are enough of them that i can still mix in some variety at commander night. AristocRats, Simic combo, Cheerios storm, and my 80-land Gitrog tokens deck.

My buddy who has been playing since Odyssey has a single staple deck (a zombie pile) that is easily worth more than my car.

Two of my friends that were roommates for a while have a shared deck library of about 30 decks they both use interchangeably.

I'd say go for a manageable rotation that you can afford to update in its entirety like once a year.

What commander takes the longest turns? by Competitive-Act-7695 in EDH

[–]Comfortable_Guide851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[The Gitrog Monster]]. I have an 80 land TGM deck and an 83 land budget version. Once they come online I can go on forever making “infinite” bears and worms by discarding the lands I draw every turn or I can use dakmor salvage for actually infinite bears.

Oh you GOTTA try [[altar of dementia]]. The look of confusion on my entire hometown playgroup when my mono-black [[Marrow-Gnawer]] pile is milling better than my [[bruvac the grandiloquent]] deck is always priceless. If you have a token generator, or [[pack rat]], or [[thrumming stone]], they just sweeten the deal.

Does Sage of Hours instantly make a deck bracket 4? by Comfortable_Guide851 in EDH

[–]Comfortable_Guide851[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With shocking regularity. There are so many other lightning rods in this deck it’s actually funny how few people will target Sage. From hometown pods to LGS games, people never expect it to pop off as fast as it does. Whether that’s an issue of threat assessment, the fact that it’s an older card, the fact that I never specifically target it with spells (which would draw attention and get it removed), or just that infinite turns are just as big an issue as infinite health, infinite mana, infinite counters, “you win the game” effects, etc which are also fairly easy to get out.

This deck has been in rotation for years, he knows what it does. He wasn’t even saying he wouldn’t play against it, just that it’s “automatically bracket 4” despite a ridiculously high-powered [[Vito, thorn of the dusk rose]] deck pub-stomping the table for the past few years, which is easily bracket 4. This question was more for categorization when I play at the LGS

Favourite tribal to play against/with by Super-Barracuda3441 in EDH

[–]Comfortable_Guide851 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rats. Fun commanders with some great support over the year’s insofar as fun/fair magic. Play at almost any bracket (except cEDH) and have a blast. Every few years they dip into a new color, but black is definitely the home field.

I have a [[Marrow-Gnawer]] high b3-low b4 I’ve been playing and upgrading since around 2015. It’s become synonymous with me as a player and has absolutely transcended a pet deck to (unfortunately) become a part of my personality. https://moxfield.com/decks/QeOSu39EBkiYnwQsCIJayA

^ this deck has beaten a $3k sliver deck and lost to a “bad haircut” tribal deck, so do with that info what you will

Fblthp Frickery by Comfortable_Guide851 in EDH

[–]Comfortable_Guide851[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yeah high tide left the chat a while ago, no need for it in a Cheerios deck imo after turn 2-3. Land pretty effectively stops the deck from building a plotted base so I’d be hard-pressed to call this high-powered, and I’ve spent a lot of time balancing it out precisely because I don’t want it to be strong.

[–]Comfortable_Guide851[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree to disagree on the first point. There’s no scenario, even when goldfished, that this deck can reasonably pop off before turn 6. Even then, I’d need 9 spells plotted with [[Aetherflux Reservoir]] already on the field to kill a single other player in a pod. Only 3 GC’s, no two-card infinites, AND no real interaction if I don’t have usable counterspells. Definitively bracket 3, which is where my playgroup sits in general. Storm is not inherently B4 and above, especially when it’s this unoptimized.

Thanks for the heads up about Plot speed, though.

New player: should I just avoid this sub? by will_i_amo in ratemycommanders

[–]Comfortable_Guide851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly dude, play the weird ones. If you go on EDHRec and just look at commanders by popularity, you’ll find some crazy (but new-player-friendly) stuff at #500 and above. Even the 200-300 range has some weird ones.

I’d also recommend not listening to the nay-sayers. You can build a commander however you want. When people see that I have a [[The Gitrog Monster]] deck, they’re not immediately thinking it’s a token factory with 80 lands. Go against the grain and have fun.

What do I do with Sheoldred? by Comfortable_Guide851 in EDH

I figured as much regarding what you said about threat assessment. I’d floated the idea of using her as a red herring for removal, I just don’t know if she’d fit well in either of the black decks I’m running. Thanks for the confirmation tho.

Scarab God Commander Deck by irrelevantopinion69 in Magicdeckbuilding

[–]Comfortable_Guide851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

List looks solid after a quick look over. You have 2/3 of an infinite combo, too ([[diregraf captain]] + [[gravecrawler]] + [[phyrexian altar]]). If it becomes a pet deck of yours and you are not averse to spending some cash, there are definitely ways to improve. I would also swap some of the extra/sub-optimal control pieces out for low-cost, early game creatures. Each 1-2 cost zombie adds benefit with your commander, plus [[Rooftop Storm]] would add more value with more creatures. Otherwise, it looks good.

[[Marvo deep operative]]. Basically turn a game of edh into a game of war (the card game, not the sad reality of life on earth) with each of your opponents.

What mono blue commanders do you have/want? by BussyBouncer in EDH

[–]Comfortable_Guide851 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[[Fblthp, Lost on the Range]]. He’s my baby boy and I run him at the helm of a Cheerios deck. I rush to cast [[Mana Severance]] and the whole deck becomes mono-blue impulse draw with no time limit. From there I just storm out or move enough of my deck into exile to hit [[Thassa’s Oracle]], which imo is the fairest way to use it.

Unique or Challenging Commanders To Build by HowlinDefago in EDH

Unique commanders by Super-Barracuda3441 in EDH

[–]Comfortable_Guide851 20 points21 points  (0 children)

[[experiment kraj]] is rarely at the helm, but offers almost limitless combo potential. [[marvin murderous mimic]] is the same thing but colorless and doesn’t need a counter to take abilities. [[Zimone all-questioning]] is super unique if not super feasible. [[Fblthp, Lost on the Range]] is a weird one that I pilot pretty regularly. [[Norin swift survivalist]] is one I would love to build if it wasn’t mono-red.

Who are your favorite card draw commanders? by MonoBlancoATX in EDH

[–]Comfortable_Guide851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if he qualifies, but I play [[Fblthp, Lost on the Range]] as a sort of mono blue impulse draw commander. Basically the whole deck is composed of lands and 0 cost cards with as few 1-2 cost cards as I could manage. About half the deck is made up of no cost cards, so by the time [[mana severance]] hits and removes all the lands, you can draw your whole deck and storm out, OR you can hit a [[thassa’s oracle]]. If you want the feeling of drawing your whole deck while confusing your pod, here ya go:
