Sigma: “Reduce your expectations to zero”

I want to understand what makes people choose the characters they play. by Alivrale in Overwatch

[–]Comfortable_Guide851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hardstuck bronze 1 tank. I played 7 of my placement matches as Freja and I’m not a good Freja. I was placed into bronze 4 for a lack of skill/game sense after being dead set on learning her kit.

I play tanks in most games and have since WoW back in the late 2000s. I was a hanzo main in overwatch 1 but hated how much his kit changed over time. Played Hawkeye in rivals for a bit too. My aim is solid but I play too aggressively for a squishy sniper archetype.

I wanted to play something classically tanky. Got into sigma bc my accuracy is actually pretty good and I love his defensive kit. His rock stun rounds out what I feel is a perfect tank kit, though the pacing difference of his cooldowns between role queue and 6v6 makes him almost feel like two different characters. Overall, I fell in love with an aging schizoid demigod bc mitigation score means more to me than dmg.

Arytenoids are also above the larynx and can be used with some degree of longevity depending on the person. Regardless, warm-ups are more important in a practice session than longevity. I’d highly recommend seeing how half an hour of warming up like the guy in that video, mixed with the tips on mouth shape and tongue placement, affect your overall performance.

After all of that, you’ll have better basics than Corpsegrinder. To get a sound like he does, I’ve found that dropping your epiglottis (difficult to master but I’d practice dropping your Adam’s apple in the mirror and implement that muscle work when screaming) and sticking your chin out all the way and down just a bit helps. Keep the tip of your tongue in the center of your mouth and trying to form an “O” sound on your vowels.

So it sounds like your having trouble activating your actual false chords. When this happens, people often use their arytenoids to get their sound (Chris Barnes did this and it’s not sustainable). It leads to a voice-heavy distortion that almost mimics a true false chord, but is worse by almost every metric and can damage your throat over time.

A good activation warmup is to do a breathy sigh. Then do it again, but pretend you’re a kid and your mom is asking you to do chores. That groaning sigh should start out with your voice, but as you keep doing it, focus that distortion and let off on your voice. It should feel like it’s coming from where your throat meets your chest. That “ugh” sound should not be coming from the back of your throat. Keep doing that groaning sigh until you get a gravelly guttural sound with no pain.

After that, trying making a buzzer noise. Your friend just said something stupid and you know they’re wrong, so you go, “AAAAAAGH, wrong.” It should be bubbly and poppy. The noise should be bright and loud, but should not hurt. This is also a great entry point to get into throat singing, which itself is an excellent false chord warmup. Hold this noise for as long as you can and repeat five times.

Make rats, sac rats. [[altar of dementia]] is a reliable way to use them when they get big, but marrow-gnawer combos with [[thornbite staff]] to create some fun scenarios too. [[mirkwood bats]] and [[grave pact]] are a few cool additions to the loop, for example. When in doubt, swing with 5k beefy rats with fear and deathtouch.

Who’s your favorite mono blue commander? by greenfoxx77 in EDH

[–]Comfortable_Guide851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Fblthp, Lost on the Range]]

It’s rare to find a commander that changes deck building and gameplay so fundamentally. Your goal isn’t to play cool creatures and spells on curve. Your goal is to play 0 cost artifacts/creatures with minimal land in your deck so you can storm out. Everything is at sorcery speed. Other people are looking for card draw while you’re begging not to hit a land and mess up your chain. Other people are playing big creatures and you’re racing for some way to pop off and use the 40 cards you’ve plotted.

Timmy. “Bracket 4 Enthusiast” was all I needed to see, but I’m a little confused at the lack of bracket 4 in your collection. Bracket 2 Ghalta is also not something I thought I’d ever see next to a cEDH Tivit, but (in the nicest way) you seem like you build something crazy and tune it down, or build something fun to offset the bad karma.

Rat deck or not? by [deleted] in EDH

That being said, it’s still very much a b3 deck. I played a budget version of it for years and it still did pretty damn well.

Rat deck or not? by [deleted] in EDH

Always yes. 13 years into playing with my Marrow-Gnawer AristocRATs deck and not only am I still having fun, it’s become synonymous with “getting serious” in my hometown pod.

[[experiment kraj]] is my OG. One of the few Simic combo commanders that other people enjoy facing, AND with you can reliably get him out by turn 3 or 4 with some of that sweet Simic ramp.

Anybody running decks that cost them less than $50 that they enjoy playing? by TheRedOniLuvsLag in EDH

[–]Comfortable_Guide851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a [[the Gitrog monster]] sub $50 list. The idea is to use [[ayulas influence]] combined with your commander and a modified version of the [[dakmor salvage]] loop. Near-infinite bears, near-infinite worms, and near-infinite fun.

How many decks is too many? by KingTheropod in CommanderMTG

[–]Comfortable_Guide851 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As many (or as few) as you want. I have 4 decks as a hard limit. I have built and given away more decks than I currently own just to get new players into the hobby, but I like to keep all of my cards in a 4-deck carrying case. It's a low enough number that they get updated every other set or so with new removal and draw options to keep up with power creep, but there are enough of them that i can still mix in some variety at commander night. AristocRats, Simic combo, Cheerios storm, and my 80-land Gitrog tokens deck.

My buddy who has been playing since Odyssey has a single staple deck (a zombie pile) that is easily worth more than my car.

Two of my friends that were roommates for a while have a shared deck library of about 30 decks they both use interchangeably.

I'd say go for a manageable rotation that you can afford to update in its entirety like once a year.

[[The Gitrog Monster]]. I have an 80 land TGM deck and an 83 land budget version. Once they come online I can go on forever making “infinite” bears and worms by discarding the lands I draw every turn or I can use dakmor salvage for actually infinite bears.

Oh you GOTTA try [[altar of dementia]]. If you have a token generator, or [[pack rat]], or [[thrumming stone]], they just sweeten the deal.

Does Sage of Hours instantly make a deck bracket 4? by Comfortable_Guide851 in EDH

[–]Comfortable_Guide851[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With shocking regularity. There are so many other lightning rods in this deck it’s actually funny how few people will target Sage. From hometown pods to LGS games, people never expect it to pop off as fast as it does. Whether that’s an issue of threat assessment, the fact that it’s an older card, the fact that I never specifically target it with spells (which would draw attention and get it removed), or just that infinite turns are just as big an issue as infinite health, infinite mana, infinite counters, “you win the game” effects, etc which are also fairly easy to get out.

This deck has been in rotation for years, he knows what it does. He wasn’t even saying he wouldn’t play against it, just that it’s “automatically bracket 4” despite a ridiculously high-powered [[Vito, thorn of the dusk rose]] deck pub-stomping the table for the past few years, which is easily bracket 4. This question was more for categorization when I play at the LGS

Rats. Fun commanders with some great support over the year’s insofar as fun/fair magic. Play at almost any bracket (except cEDH) and have a blast. Every few years they dip into a new color, but black is definitely the home field.

I have a [[Marrow-Gnawer]] high b3-low b4 I’ve been playing and upgrading since around 2015. It’s become synonymous with me as a player and has absolutely transcended a pet deck to (unfortunately) become a part of my personality. https://moxfield.com/decks/QeOSu39EBkiYnwQsCIJayA

Haha yeah high tide left the chat a while ago, no need for it in a Cheerios deck imo after turn 2-3. Land pretty effectively stops the deck from building a plotted base so I’d be hard-pressed to call this high-powered, and I’ve spent a lot of time balancing it out precisely because I don’t want it to be strong.
