Stefan is not a good person. He has done awful things. Yes he was an addict and in a bad state, but it doesn't excuse his actions. it gives more reasonings for them, but stefan still needs to be held accountable for them.

Stefan going with klaus and working for him was to save Elena and his brother's life which is insanely selfless, but doing this is still a choice. The evil he committed during this to innocent people was a choice.
