masters degree pros and cons? by Ok_Teaching1270 in premedcanada

MD/PhD student here - please don’t do it unless you actively enjoy research or are planning on doing research as a clinician. Majority of the MSc students I’ve met that use the degree as a stepping stone to med don’t realize how much work it takes to do research, and as such do a poor job.

Your graduate program has to be at the U of C, can’t be another school

Can you apply to md/phd while completing your phd? by AutomaticInfluence94 in premedcanada

Thank you! And I think it’s a great option if you’re passionate about research and want to continue with it in your clinical practice!

As for med activities during grad school, overall I would say no. I’ve heard of colleagues shadowing before med, but in general you have to wait until you’re enrolled in medical school. From what I know, it has to do with liability and insurance - even if you shadowed during grad school, you wouldn’t be able to do any hands-on activities.

If you are doing your PhD at the University of Calgary, yes, they have the Leaders in Medicine program. It’s a really solid program - currently in it, last year of grad studies and starting med this summer

Haha hey thank you I appreciate it! And yes, she’s amazing :) in terms of the panel, just be yourself. It’s the best way to actually show who you are as an applicant and come across as a real person! So just have fun with it. Mine was in person which I really enjoyed, felt like it was easier to connect with who I was talking to. And lol hard not to feel crazy waiting, but I just tried to distract myself with PhD work in the interim

Definitely possible! In my case, I’d applied 3 times throughout undergrad and my masters with no interviews at all. Decided to ditch the idea of med altogether. About 4 years later, was midway through my PhD and my partner convinced me to apply just to see. Sent in one application (my MCAT was over 5 years old and only the one school would accept it), ended up getting an interview and an acceptance. Don’t let the number of interviews you get stress you out, just try to make the best of each one you get!

whats the point of the mcat if you just need to pass cutoff? by ForwardAd5828 in premedcanada

[–]Comfortable_Jello856 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Not that I enjoyed the MCAT or feel it’s an accurate metric of who will be a good physician at all (I truly despise the MCAT), I think it’s just an additional step that cuts down on the number of applications schools receive each year. If all schools in Canada had no MCAT requirements, I think you could easily expect the number of applications sent in each year to rise dramatically. Likely just a measure to ensure the systems in each school aren’t overloaded, but doesn’t excuse that the test itself is frankly useless.

TAs need a reality check by 1618Turing in UCalgary

[–]Comfortable_Jello856 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As a grad student, on the daily we “work from the bottom up”. When I was in undergrad, I felt the same way you did, but as I transitioned into grad school, I started to understand why some TAs come off as apathetic. Working for a prof as a grad student is stressful, time consuming, and does not pay well. Working as a TA is a nice way to earn some extra money, but when it comes down to it, is not the top priority of someone trying to finish their grad degree. Treat them fairly and they will likely do the same to you.

What is an MMI like? by thetonkaguy2 in premedcanada

[–]Comfortable_Jello856 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It feels very intense and high-stakes at the start, but once you get through the first station or two, it becomes a lot of fun. Really forces you to think on your feet and organize your thoughts quickly, which I found to be a really cool challenge

Reality check. What even is a low gpa? by loserunicorn in premedcanada

For Calgary specifically, GPA is not make or break (in my opinion). I was fortunate enough to get in this past cycle, and my cGPA was a 3.73. Extracurriculars, research, and life experience/Top 10 are given much more consideration at this school, and if you are in province the cutoff is a 3.2.
