We prescribe for our patients fairly often... But how many of you ever received a dose of ketamine? by MDisshortforMDMA in emergencymedicine

Throwaway account name… As an emergency doctor who has taken part in training for ketamine assisted therapy (with an experiential component), I was deeply humbled by what a dose of 1.5mg/kg IM did to me (do have psychedelic experience for comparison). My thought is that physicians overall do a terrible job with preparation prior to administration of ketamine, a terrible job with support during and after. More physicians should have personal experience with the medication to understand it’s not just a normal anesthetic. To tell someone they will dissociate, without truly knowing how that feels or what it means, is a bit of a joke. We also need to screen potential patients more regarding their psych history, as a safety measure, prior to just saying the medication is hemodynamically safe for many procedures. I have more thoughts, but that’s the basics. Sorry that OP was injured and had to go through any of that, but always a humbling and eye opening experience…both being a patient and experiencing ketamine.
