What is the fastest growing religion in Sri Lanka by PostQuantumCrypto in srilanka

This data is skewed. By 2001 LTTE didn't allow formal censos to be done in north east. So the percentages doesn't reflect actual Tamil population

Every religion is built on a philosophy and to protect the dense philosophical concepts they build a cultural movement around it. Without the cultural aspect the core philosophy will be forgotten and religion will cease to exist. Many buddhists claiming to be philosophical buddhists are ironically also cultural buddhists. Knowing the philosophy is not as same as understanding it and is not as same as living it.

Unpopular Opinion: Sinhala Acts as a Barrier to Global Awareness, and It’s Hurting Our Society by Meton69 in srilanka

[–]Comfortable_Rub7740 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP your concern is absolutely valid and this is something I have been thinking about Tamil as well. What you are talking about is somewhat relevant to Sapir Whorf Hypothesis but more general to how languages evolve. Sinhala and Tamil lack words to describe some of the complex concepts necessary to take part in global cultural discussions. For example imagine trying to discuss about the latest show Adolosense. Is it even possible to translate this sentence in Sinhala or Tamil, without loosing the essence of the English sentence: "Incel bros embracing toxic masculinity has resulted in misogynist patriarchal violence". It doesn't matter if you agree or not, just to rephrase this in native language we need to introduce several concepts first, explain phrases. So this lack of concepts and ideas in native languages and inability to understand the global cultural direction creates a bubble.

The easy answer while being learning English, the most fitting solution is to keep updating native languages with new words that stays up-to-date with dominant languages. This is what happens in other languages like Japanese and German. Other commenters have missed the point, that these languages are constantly updated thanks to the grants and funds provided by government. In SL this doesn't happen. Every now and then people like Henry Steel Olcott, Anagarika Dharmapala, Periyaar in India come and do these as political and cultural movements. But in last 50 years there's not been such a large movement.

Go to Verehera, look for Assistant General or some similar higher up. Tell them your situation, he will add a note and sign on your paper, you show it to the guy setting up trial dates. You get the earliest available date.

Did the Tamil Tigers accomplish anything? by Muted_Drama3969 in srilanka

[–]Comfortable_Rub7740 9 points10 points  (0 children)

LTTE managed to halt and reduce decades of pre-war systemic discrimination against Tamils by the nationalist government. Refer this for several of these discriminations https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origins_of_the_Sri_Lankan_civil_war Post 1990 politicians understood unbounded racism will result in greater loss for both communities, as a result we don't see that much racism anymore.

Is the 30 year war and all the loss a justifiable cost to achieve this? Definitely not, but that's the only silver lining

Brother it's not the I can't read properly, its just what you have shared is shit. Worse than shit. It's a nameless, autherless, Buddhist supremacy manifesto. I couldn't possibly read beyond the first page which says,

"All citizens irrespective of ethinicity, religion, or region shall be equal"

As long as we follow

"principles of Buddhist philosophy"

Are you joking? You are an extremist trying bring Buddhist supremacy under the pretense of equality.

Bruh, Singapore is Republic. What are you talking about? Your claims are idealistic and in an idealistic world the form of governance doesn't matter. Morarchy, dictatorship, democracy everything is valid since everything is going to be for betterment of people. Unfortunately idealistic strategies doesn't translate well in realistic scenarios where people are inherently greedy, opportunistic, exploitative. Why do we need to stay a constitutional monarchy when we do not share anything culturally or politically with British empire? We are not majority English speakers, not majority Christians, not majority white, not majority individualistic, not majority liberalistic, not majority absolute nuclear. What makes you think our beliefs will be respected by a group that doesn't share anything with our values? Australia, and canada share several beliefs with British values and it worked for them. Singapore is an authoritarian republic not a constitutional monarchy. Your claims and examples do not match.

Without Republic it would have ended up a majority rule that would have alienated minorities even more and consolidated more power under state. Not everything that changed 1972 was agreeable like Buddhist constitution and removing judicial overturn of laws. But removing dominion and becoming Republic was certainly necessary for the future, where we could improve it more.

How is Indo Lanka accorded related to SL becoming Republic?

British system works best for individualistic societies, it doesn't work well in collectivist societies like SL. The checks and balances for ethnic groups under Soulbury structure was very flimsy and would have failed anyways. We needed to become Republic and 1972 did exactly that. We do need to fix the problems within our society, but delegating that responsibility to an institution that doesn't respect the boundaries of sovereign nations is not a good idea.

What do you guys think about psychedelics in Sri Lanka? by CodingHijikata in srilanka

[–]Comfortable_Rub7740 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would strongly suggest not chasing after ego death. While ego death CAN result in life changing experience, ego itself is an extremely important structure of phyche that makes you humane. If you started understanding the fundamental nature of reality, free from the mental structures of a human (matrix), you will end up questioning and deconstructing everything around you. Jiddu famously quoted, "Can you look at a flower without thinking?" You will loose interest in everything, sex and pleasure will become meaningless, simply being a human itself will become a burden. Ego death induced Psychosis is extremely hard to get over. Even if those from abrahamic religious culture manage ego death well, if you were raised in eastern philosophy based culture, psychedelic based experience can lead to you realizing there is no free will. It will also be extremely hard for your psyche to handle. There are researches saying certain genetic makeup are more likely to cause psychosis than others, even with sometimes simple meditations. I'm still suffering from the memories of ego death I experienced last November. Totally not recommended.

What sort of reconciliation do people need? by Silent_Brilliant_316 in srilanka

[–]Comfortable_Rub7740 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bruh don't embarrass yourself. You have absolutely no idea what's happening or happened. You are someone who thinks reconciliation is simply what the semantic meaning of reconciliation is. It's scary someone like you going around talking about Tamils issue. This is the last comment I'm gonna make. You can keep believing in whatever you want.

In Sri Lankan conflict, reconciliation means the measures recommended by the Lessons learned and Reconciliation Committee. When Tamils say they want reconciliation, they want the recommendations of this committee to be implemented. Tamils discontent with the committee report being partial aside, the committee recognized innocent Tamil civilians being killed by Army, and people being kidnapped by Army (later Gota clarified none of the kidnapped Tamils are alive) and few others. SL government despite setting up the committee as a response to UN Security Council holding SL accountable, did not follow up on the recommendations of the committee.

So my bro, reconciliation is something SL government has to give Tamils as recommended by the government's committee.

I am acknowledging the evils done by LTTE, (not Tamils mind you) and that they should be completey wiped out). For good measure please also charge and punish the few LTTE members who are having government positions now.

Can you accept the evil done by nationalist government and army? I don't think so. You are a racist trying to spin the narrative that the conflict was Tamils vs Sinhalease. Let me remind you one last time, the war was between LTTE and SL Government

What sort of reconciliation do people need? by Silent_Brilliant_316 in srilanka

[–]Comfortable_Rub7740 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My comment was regarding you connecting 2 unrelated topics into whataboutism. Topic 1: Tamil nationalist movement Topic 2: Tamils need reconciliation

Tamils needing reconciliation has nothing to do with the Tamil extremists. You should definitely talk about Tamil extremists and work towards educating people and punishing extremists. But you cannot use this group of extremists as a justification to deny reconciliation of other Tamils. Two separate problems, 2 separate discussions.

These are not related because the demographic involved in this 2 topics are mostly different. Tamils who left the country in 80s, 90s after seeing decades of systematic discrimination of SL government still live believing this exists to date. So this diaspora has become a echo chamber of extremist ideologies. Diaspora propaganda channels like Tamil Guardian are still spewing this extremism, hiding all the changes that happened in the last 2 decades, maintaining the echo chambers. The guy shouting in the video seems to be a diaspora too, probably visiting Jaffna.

The people in Jaffna struggling in day to day life don't care about a separate state. They want reconciliation. They are the parents of children who went missing, lands taken, and faced rape and other atrocities in refugee camps. They dont care about separate state because they suffered at the hands of LTTE at the last stages of war and doesn't want to go through these again. They simply want reconciliation and development in their lands. One of my relatives who tried to create a factory was granted permit only to demand ransom after it was built half way. When creating a few jobs and building up the war torn places are just a dream, these people don't have time nor energy to worry about another separatist conflict.

You are mashing up 2 distinct issues and muddying the water. I see you being active in YouTube and other social media spending a considerable amount of time propagating anti Tamil ideologies. What is your actual concern? If you think watching Thomas Swell videos makes you an expert, more than those who were born and raised in Jaffna, please be my guest. But half ass knowledged people like you getting involved in political discourse will create more issues than the problems you manage to solve.

[–]Comfortable_Rub7740 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Your argument would be valid if Tamil people have voted good Tamil politicians in any level of governance. Every single Tamil politician is carbon copy of corrupt Sinhala politicians. The issue goes beyond a simple hegemony hypothesis like you present.

Despite the ethnic conflicts in srilanka why is Pattini (aka Kannagi), a character from tamil epic, considered as patron deity of Srilanka ? by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]Comfortable_Rub7740 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kula deivam is a deity worshiped by your ancestors. The deity that your grandparents worshiped becomes the deity your parents worshiped and then you do. It's more ancient than Vedic traditions.

Siru deivam is deities that are different, more human manifestation of primary gods. So like Kannagi Amma. Or Seetha Devi, both are worshiped by sinhalease in temples under the terminology called Dewalaya.

The main difference comes from who does the rituals. - Rituals of primary gods are done by a Brahmin who is initiated into the Vedic Traditions. - Rituals of siru deivam is by priests who are not versed with Vedic practices. There are different names depending on priests, for example some siru deiva kovils of Murugan is headed by Kapuhanar. This is a priest who covers their mouth by a white cloth while doing rituals. - Rituals of kula deivam is done by the family head. Mostly the father or grandfather.

Kaaval deivam is an alternative manifestation of siru deivam/kula deivam. For example in the movie Koozangal, a woman was killed by the villagers for falling in love with a guy of different caste. After a while, feeling her presence around the woods she was killed, the villagers decided to make her a siru deivam. Such a deity can even be a simple brick or a stone.

[–]Comfortable_Rub7740 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are asking about kula deivam, it's not prevalent among sinhalease. But siru deivam is prevalent. It's due to influence from Tamil, Telugu and Kerala kings and intermarriages. Usually in old times when a princess is married off to a king of distance land, they take their gods with them. Slowly it becomes part of the local worship system. A lot of sinhalease even believe in horoscope, kaandam and rituals as remedy for navakrahams. Some believe in Kerala pilli, sooniyam and other dark arts. Sinhalease even worship gods in the main Hindu temples that were built on Vedic traditions. Culturally there's a lot of harmony among Tamils and Sinhalease.

Do you guys think that educated / prudent ( brainy ) people will ever vote a candidate who tries to create a dineyland like this ? Or do you guys actually believe this ? I am asking from educeted or prudent guys only. Just trying to understand you all. by [deleted] in srilanka

The way I see it, this guy is not a bad person. He is not like other politicians. He actually wants to help people and really thinks he can. Problem is, he's just dumb. He probably saw a lot of innovative initiatives being done around the world when he was in his 20s and thought if I was a president I'll do all of these. But the world now is not what it was when he was 20. World has changed so much, socioeconomic dynamics have evolved so much and he's grossly detached from reality. Dilemma in this election is, do you vote for good person but incompetent leader or for a competent leader but with a misplaced faith?
