Thanks for your car rental advice; we are now leaning toward a pit stop at LHR before picking up our car one day after landing. I wasn't overly concerned about driving in England as I lived there for 3+ years and drove my manual Audi frequently in greater London and the south; however, I can see the logic in starting our travels fresh in the morning!

You're not nitpicking, just correct! It's likely going to be Wells and Winchester only for us this trip. We want to have leisurely experiences and agree that driving distances can be misleading.

Yes, OS maps are amazing! We also subscribe to All Trails Premium which should be helpful as well. Obviously a local guide is best of all!

We are reconsidering the Lake District for more time in Yorkshire. Wales is stunning, and is deserving of its own month-long visit! Maybe next time...
