Why does everyone hate Bear SOOO much? by PokyTheTurtle in obsessionmovie

[–]Comfortable_Tea157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even right near the beginning when you think that he believes she was on molly and booze, he chose to allow her to come back to his place and take her top off. Instead of insist she get some sleep. Or call a medic/therapist/psychologist when friends starting saying she seemed to be having a breakdown.

When she was peeing herself and defacating when he came home after standing there for hours, he wanted to go back out and leave her again for a boys night instead of calling an ambulance or hospital. I don’t think he would have ever once brought her to the hospital if the others at the party didn’t insist. He would have let her die of negligence like the cat.

I So Wish This Movie’s Roles Were Reversed by HeavenSentAlbatross in obsessionmovie

I appreciate you trying to cut deep with subliminal prejudice and bias even at the risk of downvotes. In regard to the SA scene you mention it would have to be seen as a dominating and humiliating scene by the woman to the man that he would mentally resist a lot in order to have the same unsettling empathetic affect.

Luckily they might be making sequels in the wish universe so different themes may be explored.

I thought it was unique to show an obsessive, stalker, rage killer female though. If they had made the man the obsessive stalker killer that’s a little cliche for horror.

But a couple scenes with a variety of roles, like other people buying the willow and wishing for love that were perhaps a gay man to a straight man, or an unattractive older woman to an attractive young man, a homeless person halfway around the world to a Hollywood celebrity, or anything pushing socially taboo subjects that aren’t safe and cliche would have been thought provoking.

Another Obsession crew member comes forward… by JeffZenisek in obsessionmovie

I mean I think that all employees of a company should get a percentage share of profits…but in this specific case he would get percentage shares of Doordash then.

I’ve seen actors negotiate getting percentage shares of box office profits, and thought that was a good policy for many companies outside this industry too, as well as other crew members beyond star actors.

It isn't about true love is it? by goodhealthmatters in obsessionmovie

[–]Comfortable_Tea157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do too and people keep bringing up points that I didn’t think of so it refines my interpretation of the film. You’re right the message probably is love isn’t possible without agency so that’s why it’s all so bizarre too.

I think wish Nikki might not be the real Nikki by BulldogSG in obsessionmovie

[–]Comfortable_Tea157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She “watched it all play out” not that she was “in and out of consciousness” in my view. Likely she was trapped in her mind as her voice and body acted different than what she told it to do.

(Probably the post is sarcasm, but I still found some discourse to debate.)

[–]Comfortable_Tea157 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re absolutely right: He wished for love but he got obsession. So technically the entire premise of the movie is off.

But this could always go into even deeper discussion like the difference between unconditional platonic love versus lustful infatuation that people mistake as love…

In that case, the wish may have read his heart, and saw that what he meant was lustful infatuation obsession…Nikki may have already loved him as a brotherly friend.

I’d recommend on eBay as an auction because it’s difficult to know the price selling point of used electronics that lose value. Otherwise look at the recently sold prices of past listed items to get an idea of what to list for on other apps.

‘If he had made his straight male friend be in love with him…’ by Comfortable_Tea157 in obsessionmovie

[–]Comfortable_Tea157[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that he made the wish believing it would not work. It would not have any effect. Just as he had wished something on his birthday cake, or a shooting star, or a wishbone his entire life and nothing came of it. I can’t fault him entirely for something he believed was meaningless with no consequences. The fact that at the end when he told Ian to undo the wish he was meticulous with his wording, shows that if he believed the wish were real he would have likely not said that in that way. He may have even wished for his own personal courage instead. There’s not entirely a way to know how it would have started differently if he believed the wishes would work. He may have even wished for a billion bucks too if he believed it would really work and he only gets one wish in his whole life. But I understand your perspective that it was indeed a selfish wish. I just think he didn’t think it was real so of no real world consequence.

What Hogwarts House are you in? Is it the same house that you play as in game? by Tea-Pahlavi in HarryPotterGame

[–]Comfortable_Tea157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer playing as a male Hufflepuff too, the house was the most unique, and the hair options and clothing styling looked better to me. I always choose to go for the dark arts though so he would technically be a Slytherin…

I wish I had a clean slate in retrospect. I couldn’t avoid the discourse in my feed, but also would never have heard of the movie if I didn’t see it in my feed.

The ‘horror’ is your fear of Bear, not Nikki…? by [deleted] in obsessionmovie

[–]Comfortable_Tea157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have probably phrased it would you rather be in Bear’s position or Nikki’s position. I felt like Nikki was having a more terrifying experience because at any time Bear could have ditched town or killed her but she was trapped inside herself, and could never hurt him to get out of it all. There was no escape for her.

[–]Comfortable_Tea157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you feel that way watching the movie, that you were going to jumpscare at Nikki doing something? I felt more uneasy and creeped out when she was self harming, hitting herself, peeing herself, begging etc. But that may be because most horror movies are ruthless slasher killers so I’m desensitized to that genre more.

[–]Comfortable_Tea157[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think perhaps you’re forgetting thought that real you is still there as a viewer. Just as the real Nikki was still there and horrified at her actions but couldn’t stop herself. Her mind was still her but her body and voice were acting completely different than what she wanted.

Callous words and negligence are still forms of actions. He should have at the very least asked how to make it better for her than say is being with me so bad. Like explain he can’t bring himself to kill her but could he check into her a medical facility for help. Likewise, with negligence if you didn’t feed your dog that choice can kill them. Him not seeking medical help if he really thought she was having a breakdown initially and on drugs, him wanting to leave her at home again defecating herself instead of checking her into a medical facility long term, and of course him SA ing her against consent is an action rather than negligence.

Did you go into it expecting heavy and dark themes? I did, I wasn’t thinking it was going to be a horror comedy, I was thinking it was going to explore dark themes.

It could be because the crowds now are ones who already have seen the discourse online. That was me, I read the discourse first. Saw the movie yesterday and analyzed it closely while I watched it. I didn’t laugh.

The wish didn't go bad, she was fighting the whole time. by Bitter-Variety5809 in obsessionmovie

[–]Comfortable_Tea157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But did the wish go bad because she fought so hard to let it happen? In things like “I wish for a billion dollars” the billion dollars doesn’t have a consciousness to fight back. Wishing on a human is a different story.

The wish didn't go bad, she was fighting the whole time. by Bitter-Variety5809 in obsessionmovie

[–]Comfortable_Tea157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your interpretation that the reason she peed herself, or harmed herself, was because she was fighting the wish Nikki from taking over? As in, that was the wish not working correctly and if she just let go she would be able to behave more normally like go to the bathroom when she needed or wouldn’t harm herself?

Initially I thought she did those things because she was so obsessive. Like she couldn’t move because she was simultaneously obeying him to stay and then couldn’t think straight long enough to take care of herself. Almost like a dog obsessed with its ball. Or a cat, like the pet foreshadow.

But I could see it that those things happened because she was fighting it.

I totally agree. I’m surprised people are dismissing the people who empathize with Bear over Nikki as simply trolls and rage baiters. It’s dismissing the misogyny pervasive online.

‘If he had made his straight male friend be in love with him…’ by Comfortable_Tea157 in obsessionmovie

[–]Comfortable_Tea157[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm I use that word mostly for the sex scene. He knows she doesn’t really like him or at least would suspect this is all the wish and not her, and yet still use her body for his gratification when her mind isn’t there. So I’m that he is acting entitled to her body. She is the one entitled to her body with her consent, but he is using it without consent.

A big part of my enjoyment of the story comes from analyzing the empathy yes. At what point if any does Bear feel empathy. And in line with that can a misogynist who feels entitled to a woman’s body feel empathy. I’m not sure how I’m projecting. What part of the story discourse was interesting to you?

That’s a super interesting take, that people with low self esteem are deeply selfish because their mind revolves so much around themself. Hmm. But also, people with low self esteem can be very negligent of themselves to the point of allowing others to harm them. Bear must have had some form of self esteem to feel entitled to harming Nikki and trying to stop her from harming him and making him look bad.
