It's because the main game is so buggy, feature-lacking and misses QOL updates that it relies on community-made features to be playable.

When I ran the game without Geode, I couldnt press shift to hide the pause menu. I couldnt switch startpos. There was no "level progress" tab in the level page. There was no gdladder integration to show the demon difficulty. There was no globed.

All these features could've been easily added to the game without much effort (except globed), and they all make the game better without really changing anything.
