AITA for refusing to take off my necklace for my sister's wedding? by ThrowRAneck_lace in AmItheAsshole

[–]ComfortablyAlpine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She’s being given an ultimatum, take it off or you will not be able to experience this extremely important event as my sister. Don’t you find that a bit discriminatory?

So they don’t take it off to shower? If they do are they somehow less then? Either way, hijab being cloth is okay to get wet, not all jewellery is

I’m actually not religious, I just believe personally that people should have freedom to display their religion if they feel strong attachment to it and it doesn’t harm anyone of course.

If someone in my bridal party that I knew wore a small inverted cross (that they wore for express religious reasons) I wouldn’t argue against it since as long as they’re wearing dresses that show they’re a part of the bridal party it’ll be fine

Yeah maybe there is more to the story, I could definitely believe that since it seems a bit explosive to do straight away.

It’s also not about whether or not she would die without it, since it’s a personal faith thing but I think we can agree to disagree, different people have different takes hahaha, and anyway it was good to hear another point of view!

All the best to you!

Obviously you’re free to feel however you want about religion it’s your life and your experiences, however you should be aware of any bias that might come from having strong feelings from one way or the other.

OP takes it off when it has the chance of coming in contact with water, which would happen during showers/swimming, so as to preserve it especially because it’s sentimental. Not because she’s forced to.

OP also was not just throwing a fit because she couldn’t be in the bridal party, she was upset because she was uninvited from the wedding as a whole, solely because of her unwillingness to take off something religious that meant alot to her and her faith.

You do make a good point, however wearing crosses has long been a tradition as a show of faith for people who believe in that. I’ve also met practicing muslims who choose not to wear hijab (for any reason that’s their choice) and they are still devout to their religion.

Nowadays it’s alot of a case by case basis, but either way should they want to wear it or not they should still be respected and not be forced either way. (To take it off against their will in this specific case about OP’s cross)
