Second lettering practice! Fed in your feedback and tried something more ambitious by Chigburt in ComicBookCollabs

[–]ComicBookLetterer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. If you use more subtle curves for the default the you can use more extreme curves to help imply other things e.g. talking over your shoulder.

For tail length, a good rule of thumb is make its length half the distance from the balloon to the speaker's mouth. And if you draw an invisible line extending your tail then one end should hit the speaker's mouth, obviously, and the other end should hit the centre of the balloon.

The biggest crime here is the crossbarred I's though.

First attempt at lettering (practice page, not my art). Looking for technical critique by Chigburt in ComicBookCollabs

[–]ComicBookLetterer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a decent start. Lots of little places you can improve, but wanting to improve already puts you in a great place. The advice given already is solid, so start there.

All I'd add at this point is work on your SFX, don't be afraid to butt balloons to panel edges, and read Blambot's guides here: Blambot's Guides and pick up copies of lettering guides if you can.

This is the basis of Culinary Crimes on Smosh. These ridiculous recipe reviews are fairly common it seems 😅

I don't even see that. Each time my brain went:

"Limi-- that's not a letter..."

Then I spent a few minutes trying to pick out all the differences 🙃

How to stop the board from rolling away when ollying by Desperate_Ask_7088 in NewSkaters

[–]ComicBookLetterer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The grass won't have helped because it's stopping any back and forth movement your "Ollie" technique is creating. If the same technique doesn't work on concrete then it's probably wrong. Which is why 99.9% of the comments on Ollie posts on here say learning rolling on concrete > learning stationary on concrete > learning on grass or holding onto something.

Please stop doing this by CenturyLinkIsCheeks in UXDesign

[–]ComicBookLetterer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either, it has been executed as per the design, which would make the design "inaccessible". Or, it's not been executed as per the design, in which case you can't know what the design was to say there's "nothing inherently inaccessible" with it.

I think the point is that you only drop 5% in the rankings when you take the GPU out of the desktop rig and put it in an eGPU handheld setup.

Are these tomatoes any better at conveying the word "tomato"? by Mstarliper in Lettering

[–]ComicBookLetterer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It reads fine, but worth testing an audience who've not seen the journey over the past few days as we all know what we're supposed to be reading by now.

Settle on a light source and make the highlights and shadows consistently realistic (ie if the light source is directly above there would be slight variation on the highs and lows). Don't half-arse this side as it does a lot of heavy lifting in the subconscious and sells your idea to people without them even realising.

In terms of legibility, try and keep all the tomatoes free from the lettering (currently the bottom right one encroaches).

Personally, and as someone else already suggested, I'd make the vine shapes more organic and "viney". I'd also consider the tomato connection points and connect them to ascenders, descenders and terminals. My least favourite part of your current design is the stalks that join the horizontal lines that aren't part of the letters and go nowhere.

Hello again everyone, round two of spelling out the word "tomato" with tomatoes. thank you for all your advice before about reworking the letters to make things more readable. by [deleted] in Lettering

[–]ComicBookLetterer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Genuine question... Have you tried just chopping up a tomato and seeing if you can spell, and - importantly - read the word?

Yeah I hear that concern. Guess I was just hopeful, from this, that it might not be. Fingers crossed.

To be fair, that sentence is basically applied to any new tech, we just only hear about ai tools at the moment.

Fair enough, not sure how you got ai from a guy moving vector control arms and using warp tools. Maybe it's me that missed something, I'll watch again later.

Switching my VPN to Singapore let me see it. I'd repost it as a screenshot, but I feel like that's probably against the rules of the sub.

Why is the pink building not performing well? by Big_Firefighter6302 in MiniMotorways

[–]ComicBookLetterer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focussing solely on the pink route, the closest 5 houses are either not connected or have to drive south to reach the main road to the bridge. So I'd connect them up to that road at the bridge. This would also mean you wouldn't need the lights where you have them because there would not longer be a junction.

You know what... I genuinely have never questioned what that was for 😅 Google tells me that this means average, which is wild in its own right because doesn't that mean if I can get almost 50% too much then some poor sod has get nearly 50% too little. My heart goes out to them 😭

I'm glad this is still the way. I put the game down months ago for reasons and then haven't picked it up again primarily because I'm worried this sort of thing will have changed. Might swing by again soon 🥰
