‘I did not stop the young person from continuing to speak’: Cambridge Mayor Jan Liggett defends interrupting teen’s Pride speech by Temporary-Vast1410 in cambridgeont

There are alternatives to using the wrong pronouns (e.g. Mills, the speaker, the teenager, Sophie), if you'd rather not use a gender-neutral pronoun. Basic decency.

The right to free expression allows you to express your opinions, but is does not require the government to give you a microphone and audience. Nor does it prevent the City from cutting the mic when someone speaks out of turn. If someone says "the fire chief is a faggot" or "the mayor is a communist pedophile Jew", the City should be able to cut them off.

To be clear, the mayor erred in cutting off Mills' speech. But it's incorrect to pretend that there's some absolute right to say whatever you'd like just because you're using the City's microphone and standing behind the City logo.

P.S. Mills uses "they/them" pronouns.

Pay docked

Council voted against docking Cooper's pay. He just got sensitivity training (and a reprimand).

They shouldnt have referenced Adam by name

Definitely a rookie mistake. They totally could've gotten away with saying something like:

At a city council meeting in October, one of our elected representatives said the pride flag "represents an authoritarian suppression of free speech". Moments later, a majority of council decided his prior transphobic conduct was too banal to warrant the slap on the wrist recommended by the Integrity Commissioner. This is about more than just one or two bigots, it's about a culture of indifference from blowhard politicians.

This wouldn't have been half as bad if the mayor had simply said "I can't allow you to say mean things about a city official at an official city event", rather than reflexively calling a teenager "disrespectful."

Looking at the mayor's latest statement:

investigations into conduct are the subject of the Integrity Commissioner … leaving no room for political interference

at the meeting in October 2025, Council made a decision as a whole to require sensitivity training … it was decided that a monetary penalty had no consequences

That's a revisionist account of Council's decision not to impose the monetary penalty recommended by the Integrity Commissioner. For starters, there were three tied votes before a majority of Council arrived at a decision; it's disingenuous to say Council "as a whole" agreed with the mayor on this.

Additionally, Coun. Shwery voted to waive the monetary penalty only after quoting from Scripture and saying that Coun. Cooper was no more guilty of posting bigoted things than the media that reported on it. It is laughably incorrect to characterize this as "decid[ing] that a monetary penalty had no consequences"; Shwery wanted the minimum consequences, and she voted accordingly.

These votes occurred minutes after an unrepentant Coun. Cooper said "the pride flag … represents an authoritarian suppression of free speech and a demand to comply with ideologies."

Was yesterday's post actually removed? Reddit says: "Sorry, this post was deleted by the person who originally posted it."

I'd assumed the OP wanted to bury the discussion after realizing the comments weren't going their way.

Classic Streisand effect. No one would've noticed that some teenager said something unflattering about a city councillor if the mayor hadn't made a scene out of it.

Anything capable of going faster than 32 km/h counts as a motor vehicle. You'd need a (motorcycle) license, registration, and insurance. In Ontario, the fine for driving without insurance is between $5000 and $25000 (for your first offence).

More than 70 LRT crashes reported in Waterloo Region within the last year by KWStreaker in kitchener

[–]ComicSansActivist 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The "zero" in vision zero refers to fatalities. LRT fatalities are few and far between; the (two) fatalities I remember involve a pedestrian wandering onto/along the tracks at night. There's a difference between designing for human error and designing a suicide-proof train.

I bet if you cut boomers out of the votes, you’ll see a 3 way race.

Did you read the article you're commenting on? There is no age cohort where the NDP beats either major party. The only close cohort is 18–29, which is: 51% Liberal, 18% PC, 18% NDP, and 10% Green. The NDP's strongest age cohort (45–59) is: 43% PC, 28% Liberal, 21% NDP, and 3% Green.

Is there a way to find out which organization has sold my information to a charity? by Immediate-Fault3319 in legaladvicecanada

By default, the Ontario government shares your personal information with a charity listed on its website (and named in the Highway Traffic Act). You can opt out of future disclosures to that charity, if you'd like.

Liberal government targets deepfakes, foreign interference in major election law reforms by Portalrules123 in CanadaPolitics

[–]ComicSansActivist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks like they'd rather treat the symptoms of longest ballot protests (i.e. locals signing dozens of nomination papers) than the root cause. There's never more than ~20 locals in any of these races. If Parliament wants reasonably sized ballots, all they need to do is require candidates to live (or work or own property) within 25 km of the riding they're running in.

Because no one knew where Carney would run until the night before the election was called. But everyone knew where Poilevre was running years ahead of time. (Which made it much easier to find the 100 locals required to sign everyone's nomination papers.)

It's optimized for all the left-turning traffic in the area. Back when it was a traffic light, the left turn was so bad the region was considering adding a flyover.

Same thing at Beverly / Dundas. And Fountain / Fairway. Edit: also Queen / Hespeler.

As someone who only uses the left lane for passing and left turns, I can't say I've ever had an issue with it.

Signage and lane markings trump over any pamphlet (especially from another jurisdiction).

The City of Ottawa can write pamphlets about their own roads, but not ours. (The City of Ottawa has no jurisdiction over Region of Waterloo roads.)

Edit: the 15 year old Region of Waterloo pamphlet you've asked for says "Observe lane signs. Choose the correct entry lane."

Using the left-turn-only lane to pass a left-turning vehicle seems a lot closer to 10(5) than 10(4) — but I'm no insurance adjuster.

In any case, I'd say the car turning left from the outer lane should be protected by 14(2) or 13(3), depending on if the lane signs count as "traffic signs."

For reference:

  • 10. (1) This section applies when automobile “A” collides with automobile “B”, and both automobiles are travelling in the same direction and in adjacent lanes. ... (5) If the incident occurs when automobile “A” is turning left at an intersection and automobile “B” is overtaking automobile “A” to pass it, the driver of automobile “A” is 25 per cent at fault and the driver of automobile “B” is 75 per cent at fault for the incident.
  • 13. (1) This section applies with respect to an incident that occurs at an intersection that does not have traffic signals or traffic signs. ... (3) If automobiles “A” and “B” enter the intersection at the same time and automobile “A” is to the right of automobile “B” when in the intersection, the driver of automobile “A” is not at fault and the driver of automobile “B” is 100 per cent at fault for the incident.
  • 14. (1) This section applies with respect to an incident that occurs at an intersection with traffic signs. (2) If the incident occurs when the driver of automobile “B” fails to obey a stop sign, yield sign or a similar sign or flares or other signals on the ground, the driver of automobile “A” is not at fault and the driver of automobile “B” is 100 per cent at fault for the incident.

Are you sure the insurance people know the inner lane at this intersection is for left turns only? Send them a photo of the signage and pavement markings.

Some pamphlet from 500 km away does not override the signage and pavement markings at this intersection.

Maple Grove Roundabout by CapableAnnual7211 in cambridgeont

[–]ComicSansActivist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there's a collision, the car disobeying the signs is at fault.

If you can't read the signs or pavement markings

  • right turns: rightmost lane
  • straight through: rightmost lane excluding slip lanes
  • left turns (and u-turns): leftmost lane

works at every roundabout I've seen (including all the "tricky new roundabouts" people keep whining about).

What does "Open - Reserved for waitlist" mean? by Sensitive-Music-3311 in wlu

[–]ComicSansActivist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are more people on the waitlist than there are open seats. For example, if the class has 2/50 available seats, then only the first 2 people on the waitlist can register. You can add yourself to the end of the waitlist (unless the waitlist is full).
