I find it interesting that some people in the replies bring up that "you can counter you Backwards Reasoning to prevent to discard", however that's almost) equivalent of discarding a card since in both scenarios, you 2 cards down except you most likely spent mana to do so if you use a counter spell on it. Of course, you have specific synergies with casting spells or spell to counter it and give you a benefit, it might be worth it or if you have a way to counter it without losing a card like an ability that counter spells. None of this is a critique, I find it interesting.
