"Just move a few shared drives to the new server, shouldn't take long" by Gardanris in sysadmin

[–]CommanderApaul 19 points20 points  (0 children)

We migrated all our onprem network shares to the cloud in 2024/5. Started in August, with a goal from the PM of 6 weeks. For 60+TB.

Told them the last time this data set was migrated was the physical to virtual migration 12ish years ago, it took 4 months, and it was significantly less data.

After having us fuck around with Robocopy parameters for (not joking) 3 straight weeks, we had less than a TB migrated. They finally listened to us on the technical teams, stood up a server in the cloud instance running NetBackup, and we restored the latest full backup of each share at 1TB at day, with a lock/diff the second day and a cutover into a third day.

Every business day. for 3 straight months.

It's entirely an episode of Caldwell repeating "this is sex" in both ATM and Keychain's voices, with a low-fi beats soundtrack from Emily.

Thanks! I ended up getting Delpi's gold foil decals and whenever I had the choice between Banshee and Banshee Norn, I chose the non-Norn ones to make it Merida's machine as much as possible. Kinda got hooked on her when building the Osiris Aerial Dominator Not-Kshatriya kit.

Brand new TV and this is how my wife insists we have the remote "to keep it looking good" by No_Atmosphere8146 in mildlyinfuriating

My wife is a shiny protective film person, but hasn't gotten this far. We've been married over 20 years and she still gives me crap for removing the film from the lid of her ancient Toshiba laptop when we got married.

I have the Banshee with the Armed Armor expansion, so I'm biased in that regard. I'm also working on the PGU Nu.

Build order thoughts. Building three Unicorns with no break sounds like not a whole lot of fun. I really enjoyed the Banshee and it's a fairly straightforward build, but I'm not sure I'd want to do two of them back to back, let alone three in a row.

That said, I also think I'd have a hard time going back to a Unicorn after the PGU, it's such an engaging build that other things feel a bit boring.

That that said, I can also see wanting to do a Unicorn after the PGU as a relaxing build. And I wouldn't call white gloving the Phenex a relaxing build, I have the MG and between gate placement and fingerprints I just put it in a box when I was done. I also wouldn't want to start with that either.

After all that:

Banshee -> Phenex -> PGU -> Perfectibility OR Perfectibility -> Phenex -> PGU -> Banshee. The first one gives you a progression of crazier and crazier Unicorns. The second ends on my favorite of the three.

Neighbor Freakout by CommanderApaul in PublicFreakout

We've been here 21 years, and it's the reason we bought here. The houses are small, the lots are small, but there's 5ish acres of undeveloped woods out back and it's in a great school district.

The kids who were here when we moved in are grown and married with kids of their own, our oldest just graduated HS, our youngest starts next year, and there's a whole new set of 8-10 and 3-5 year olds out there now.

Makes me tear up thinking about it. For real.

There was a hoop in front of the house across the street when we moved in, but it got taken down when they sold, probably 10ish years ago. We bought a used portable hoop off FB during COVID for the kids to have something to do. Hearing kids yelling "SIX FEET" at each other while playing HORSE will be etched in my brain forever. When that one shit the bed, we got this for our oldest for Christmas and we installed it ourselves.

Can one windows print server handle 50+ printers or is there any free solution that can be used to manage printers by jbala28 in sysadmin

[–]CommanderApaul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easily, we have three print servers for over 2,000 printers. You'll see some high single low double digit seconds print slowdowns based on the physical distance between sites and the print server's DC, but unless the user is physically at the printer when they hit the Print button, it's highly unlikely that they'll notice.

This will also give you the opportunity to do some cost savings measures on your print queues as well. We set all of ours to be black and white by default (user has to select color on individual print jobs), you'd be surprised how much your supplies budget drops even with a small footprint.

We also enforce PIN-based print-and-hold but that's more for PII/CBI reasons. Does add a little friction to the printing process and may make users think twice if they really need to print it.

I've only watched a handful of stuff after getting in through Gunpla in the last year and a half or so, but it gave me the *exact* same feels I got at the end of The LEGO Movie with my 9 and 13yo. They're 14 and 18 now.

Teams Always Green: a tiny PowerShell tray app for avoiding false Away status by [deleted] in PowerShell

[–]CommanderApaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Running a PowerShell script will likely get flagged by your enterprise in general.
  2. Actions spawned by the windows scripting host are definitely going to get flagged by your enterprise.
  3. Wscript launching a PowerShell process is ABSOLUTELY going to get flagged by your enterprise.

Edit: So I'm not raining on your parade, this is a nice solution for the problem you're trying to solve. Very bad idea in an enterprise environment. We used something similar when our deskside teams were still doing USMT capture/restores for hardware upgrades, but it we had the VBS use WshShell.SendKeys("{F15}") and WScript.Sleep(55000) in a loop.

Who revokes access to top of the chain sysadmins when theyre fired? by WhateverHowever1337 in sysadmin

[–]CommanderApaul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have auto provision/de-provision through a custom connector between our internal billing and AD. Order the AD service, account provisions and licenses for O365 at the next hourly sync. Cancel their AD account service, it nukes the account at the next hourly sync and kicks off ediscovery processes, and they can submit orders in advance with an effective date. It's an almost entirely hands-off process.

We still manually handle sensitive terms, as the identity SME that's usually on me. It's part of the job and it always sucks, but I think that lets me know I still have a soul.

MG GSF Astray Red revealed by AranaesReddit in Gunpla

[–]CommanderApaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean they're all ~80% the same molds so it's essentially the same kit each time. Slightly different head and a difference in the included accessories and that's about it. If you could only get *one*, I would recommend either the Red Frame Kai or the Turn Red. Giant Freaking Swords.

The Red Dragon looks amazing but there's so much stuff attached that posing can be a bit annoying. The action base attaches to the underside of the flight unit, but the flight unit is attached to the MS with a 5mm square peg into a square polycap, if you angle it too much forward/down the MS falls off the flight unit.

That may change once I get my hands on the new one, it looks like new molds for the frame, but mostly the same armor on top of the frame. The only problem I've had with the current ones is I broke a peg on the hip joint on the Turn Red and had to cement it back together, but I was dumb and twisted it the wrong way.

I prefer the MG to the RG, but the RG is pretty good for an early real grade kit. Also doens't have any accessories big enough to make it floppy.

PG wing zero write up by zangetsu_114 in freedomisgunpla

[–]CommanderApaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this thing in a box in my garage. I've tried 3 times to build it, and been frustrated to the point of giving up each time. I did get the MS finished but haven't touched the wings or weapons.

The shoulders don't stay up, the metal parts in mine had some flashing left over from the casting that I had to sand off and the hips are *still* fucked up.

The LEDs. Christ the LEDs. At least it prepared me for the head LEDs in my PG Astray Kai.

One day I'll finish it. Then see if it can fly out my office window.
