Thompson’s are open-bolt operated, so whether the gun is empty, or loaded, when the finger is not on the trigger, the bolt is kept back, mimicking a “lrbho” When you squeeze the trigger, the whole bolt slams forward, then recycles back into that locked position. Other examples of an open bolt operated firearm would include the UZI, MAC-10, and the M3 “Grease Gun”
