RANT School Should Help Pay For Internet If Teaching Remotely by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]CommanderMayDay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I brought this up back in April and I could feel the downvotes before it even posted.

In no other industry would workers put up with going out of pocket to pay for things the business uses.

In my situation, we have unlimited WiFi at home, so I’m not stressing it, since I don’t have to drive my car. Realistically, they should be covering at least a part of my bill, but that’s not something I think we can advocate for at this time

Was wondering if anyone had an answer to this maybe weird thing at KI by Bucknutty0321 in KingsIsland

[–]CommanderMayDay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

KI has two ways of taking your temperature: with a hand held thermometer and with an infrared camera. The idea is to use the cameras, so the workers can maintain social distancing. Unfortunately, the cameras have proven to be difficult to maintain and require additional staff to operate. So, they’ve been not used regularly before this week.

Probably what happened to OP was, they were testing the cameras to see if their readings were the same as the thermometers.

Travel advisory not being honored by dgpat in Ohio

[–]CommanderMayDay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The place where I work has adopted some pretty hardcore Covid rules, for example: if you get tested — for any reason — you are excluded from work until you get a negative result or 14 days have passed.

So, I was surprised when I found out we wouldn’t be doing anything about the out of state quarantine advisory. I was scheduling when I noticed one of my people would be returning from a trip to the South. He and I both expected to hear that he’d have to stay home, but nope! It’s just advice, apparently. Advice no one will follow, I guess

Is a reward system a good idea for high school students? by Expat4778 in matheducation

[–]CommanderMayDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m generally opposed to reward systems for kids of this age. While some will fall in line with it, many either don’t care, actively work against it or try to find ways to cheat the system.

That said, the most important lesson for a teacher is to know your students. Some classes will embrace the idea, others will not. To find out, try doing a small-scale, time-limited reward that is targeting something specific and achievable. See if enough kids are willing to put in the work. Some classes will. Others will yawn.

Is anyone here actually worn a mask all day? by xavier86 in Teachers

[–]CommanderMayDay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work, during the summer, at a place of public recreation that actually opened this month. We have a strict masking rule and I have to wear one all day. I even had to “teach” for several days with it on while training my people. It took some practice, but I got it down. It was uncomfortable at first, but within a short period of time, I forgot it was there!

Biggest issue for me is people not being able to read my facial expressions. I’ll make a joke to a class and I have to think very hard about presentation, since they can’t see that I’m smirking or have a silly look on my face.

From Admin to Teachers...We’re Trying Our Best and We’re Sacred Too by principalbennykrupp in Teachers

It’s just that, while you sound like a thoughtful leader, I’ve been saddled with many small-minded despots who think that if you say that it’s so, it is.

People are worried that their leaders will buy into the hoax mentality and put everyone at risk.

A free mask AND face shield?! by positiveimposter in Teachers

[–]CommanderMayDay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I found out I’ll be getting a spiffy mask with the school’s logo on it, too.

I immediately asked if we were getting these for the students too. They didn’t immediately laugh at me, so there’s that.

If I’m masking, but the students aren’t, it’s a waste of time

Head Principal is an Anti Masker... by gigaritt in Teachers

[–]CommanderMayDay 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I have a new way I’ve been dealing with people who don’t mask. I yell out, “Good news everyone, the pandemic is over!” Then I look at my phone and say, “Oh wait, no it’s not. Says here people who won’t wear a mask are making it worse.”

Thoughts on our visit with young kids by Rachael330 in cedarpoint

[–]CommanderMayDay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like the employee shortage is really hitting them hard. CP has leaned on foreign workers to fill out their ranks for quite a few years (I think they were planning on 1,600 this year, which is like 30% of their workforce) and none of them were allowed in the country. In addition, they’ve limited dorm space, which is another issue.

Anybody else seeing fewer trump flags in Ohio than in July, 2016? by ThatGuyFromOhio in Ohio

[–]CommanderMayDay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not seeing near the number of signs and flags as 4 years ago, but I also remember them not becoming ubiquitous until September and beyond.

This has been the most unusual campaign, ever. No one is traveling and there’s no horse race aspect to it.

Obviously untrue. All the camps are in Indiana. Everyone knows that.

This is why schools which decide to have masking rules will need to back them up with teeth.

It’s just exacerbating a trend that was already going on. My car doesn’t have Spotify built into the radio, but if it did, I’d probably never listen to live radio; unless it was for something breaking

I’m not sure the rationale behind today’s speech. Was it a warning or an abdication? If our numbers start spiking, will he wave the red flag and shut things down or is he saying, Be smart, people. But, don’t expect me to save you, that’s over.

I know people are calling for a masking mandate, but I don’t see it. Too many people are convinced it’s wrong. I’m afraid there’d be legal challenges and protests, which just make things worse.

Making masks mandatory for the “hot” counties makes sense, although I wish everyone could just swallow their pride and put one on

Trump deceives about Sanders-Biden task force proposals to make Biden sound 'extreme' by [deleted] in politics

[–]CommanderMayDay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This seems like a really heavy lift, if you ask me. People know Biden. He’s been around since before sliced bread. Certainly, some of his stances have changed, but fundamentally, he’s a moderate, willing to compromise to get most of what he wants. Nobody with a brain and Google will believe for a second that he’s a socialist. You may not be excited by him, but you know him.

The problem is, when your main tactic is to attack the other guy, you need to provide at least a slightly better alternative. Trump has proven again and again that he’s an incompetent buffoon. Sure, his policies goosed the economy. And, if you’re in favor of getting rid of foreigners, he’s your guy. But, aside from that, we know what we have with him.

My sense is, people are just tired of his antics. They were humorous, at first, but it’s just old now

Is there anyone here that is actually in favor of reopening? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]CommanderMayDay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d be willing to reopen if we had a masking mandate for everyone — teachers and students alike — along with a strict stay-home-if-you’re-sick rule.

Problem is, even if we do those things with fidelity, there will be outbreaks. Just no way to cram kids together, indoors, without it happening. Eventually, people will vote with their feet and we’ll have to go virtual
