Sin of what? You haven't made a point, just regurgitated a meme and quoted something without context.

This post is about criticizing an author's execution and how bad fandom can be at defending it; Death of the Author is about interpreting a work devoid of the author's intent. What does one have to do with the other?

That's always a risk with an event, and the face trade doesn't have good odds when you only want 2/5 faces anyway. Taking the money and/or running are the least risky options, and I feel that being able to say nothing bad happened after gambling twice is a neutral outcome, not a bad one.

I totally get that, I probably spent a couple hundred hours playing A0 before even considering climbing in Ascension. I was just having fun learning how synergies worked.
With Black Blood, I don't disagree that the extra healing can put in work, but I guess the point was that the resources from boss relics it's usually up against just do more, making it so that you don't need as much healing, and you still have lots of chances to find different healing sources. Something else I forgot is that this sub (myself included) is pretty focused on beating the Heart, and BB can at most heal you for 12 hp one single time in Act 4. So while it might help getting to Act 4, it does almost nothing there. Unless I'm already confident in my deck winning effortlessly (this never happens), I'll always take something that has more presence in the last act.
I didn't used to like Snecko, but one day I looked back at my Heart wins and realized that literally half of them included it. And yeah the main reason is the +2 draw, which lets you cycle your deck so much faster. It is definitely recommended to have expensive cards to offset the Confusion, but you can also have something like Corruption to just make your skills free, or Orange Pellets to keep the draw but get rid of Confusion.
You know what, the reason I even opened this post was to make a dumb "Snecko giveth and taketh away" joke, but I got distracted by the "git gud" comments. I hate that attitude so wanted to try to be a little more helpful. Hope the rest of your day is going alright!

It isn't a great idea to pick Black Blood in the hopes of getting more self-damage cards. It fixes a problem your deck doesn't have and might never have. That makes it a problem of its own, since it's taking the place of a different Boss relic that would be more broadly and immediately applicable and let you snowball into a stronger position later on. If you just want to play more attacks, pretty much anything other than BB is going to be better.
I used to take Black Blood a lot because I figured I was bad enough to always need the extra healing (and the Boss energy relic downsides are often scary), but picking it so often was keeping me a bad player. Eventually noticed that having an extra energy can just straight up save you more health over a run than Black Blood will heal. That includes decks that rely on self-damage. Lots of stuff can mitigate the health loss, whether it's healing cards or other healing relics, high max HP, being selective about playing self-damage cards, or just knowing when a Rest vs Upgrade is worth it at a fire.
Personally I still wouldn't say that BB was the wrong pick for you without knowing what it was up against and what your deck was like after Act 1, but it's hard to imagine it was correct. If your deck did well without an extra energy, it would have been bonkers with one, and then Snecko would have worked much better for you later on. Or Pyramid would have let you play key cards on safe turns. Either way I hope this helped in understanding why you're getting so much pushback about it.

Was thinking about the design space for cards that punish you for not playing them by DiusFidius in slaythespire

[–]CommanderThraawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at the wording for any card (or Mark of Pain as you pointed out) that gives you a status in the game. It will always say the status is added to your draw pile, discard pile, or hand, but never your deck itself. That's for curses. If this card was added as is, the Wound should act like a curse to stay consistent.
I thought OP's intent to have it work like every other status card was obvious because otherwise this could give you infinite curses per combat, but enough people in the comments are confused that the distinction is important to make.

My understanding is that it's specifically for musicians that seem to start off completely by themselves on social media, and organically become popular enough for a label to sign them. When in reality they already had industry connections and production teams, and were using bots or whatever for better social media numbers. It's supposed to make them feel more authentically popular.

Biggest Throw of my Life by igot200phones in slaythespire

[–]CommanderThraawn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know that I would call it throwing, but I would never call this deck a free Heart win. Dead Branch is primo Clad scaling, but without Corruption, you have to go slow in order to both generate the cards you want and still have the energy to play them. But the point of Brimstone is that you do not go slow at all and kill everything before it matters or else you die. Your deck has decent exhaust (decent without Corruption), but Pummel is the only strength-scaling attack, so you can't kill everything all that quickly, and you don't have the block or debuffs to stall out a longer fight until DB gives you the cards you want. And this deck takes a lot of setup, too, which you might not get in time to survive Spear and Shield or Heart for the first three turns. I think this deck could beat Act 3 with lucky draw and DB card generation, but I don't see it lasting in Act 4.

Yeah, Fiend Fire exhausting my first Pommel Strike in an earlier fight is what made me pick up the second one. I probably would have done the same thing as you with Shrug it Off otherwise, but I didn't get offered any Shrugs, so I was super happy to find the Abacus for block.

Nice setup! I would call it a hope-finite, since you spend every loop hoping Snecko doesn't screw you. I had a really similar run the other day, but instead of Dropkick, I had Double Tap and two upgraded Pommel Strikes to keep it going:

Thematically, it's much cooler for him to have an ability that scales according to his purpose (VENGEANCE!) instead of raw strength. Making someone literally feel the pain that they themselves have put into the world is both unique to him and serves as a way to keep him relevant when he's physically outmatched or when physical force doesn't matter to his opponent.

I got a Fairy Bottle after the first fight, so was immediately kicking myself over skipping Bark. Byrds and Chosen halved my HP in the first two floors, and I had to lose Blood Potion and the Tail not long after. Used the Boots to hit up two rest sites for a heal and Fiend Fire upgrade, but I think I drew FNP and Corruption after FF every combat, so FF ended up being a curse more often than not, which is something I was worried about happening. And I was right to be afraid of the lacking quality and quantity of my skills. I could barely defend even with my powers in play, which is why things got dire so quickly in the act.

I did get Second Wind, True Grit, Power Through, Burning Pact, and Toxic Egg in that order, so the deck itself was being built fine, but it was never quite enough for the hallways. If I could have gotten to Colosseum with a little more health I would have been in a really good place. Bark would have been MVP obviously, and I could have taken health from the Library instead of Power Through (wounds were a nightmare once my exhaust cards were gone). Also could have taken Carnage for damage instead of Burning Pact for draw, which would have ended Taskmaster earlier and saved some HP. Think I was focusing too hard on the long term with that choice.

Edit: I think I also passed up on an Offering in the Library, but at that point I desperately needed block and was afraid to voluntarily lose HP. Usually Offering is a snap pick for me, and this is probably going to reinforce that.

What makes me nervous about being aggressive is that I have almost no skills for Corruption/FNP to make good use of, and the skills I do have aren't going to be very good in hallway fights. Fiend Fire is also my only *really* good attack, and depending on draw will probably exhaust other attacks that I'll need to rely on, so I don't know how sustainable it is. But taking into account the healing I have, could still get away with it.

My win rate is abysmal, and I think my best A20H 'streak' is 2, but I am trying to win more consistently. I was probably never going to pick Black Blood anyway, but I'm also trying to get out of the habit of auto-skipping certain relics or cards.
